Diaper too small??

My little one is prob around 9 1/2lbs now and for the last couple of weeks (she's 4 weeks now) I feel like her diaper looks tight and uncomfortable. It doesn't seem to be bothering her? But I know when my pants are tight like this sitting down it hurts and makes gas worse!
She's in newborn size pampers but the next size up is still big around the legs?

This was the same issue for my baby. I've noticed that it being big around the leg isn't an issue as far as leaking goes. Just make sure the size 1's are pulled up high where it's snug around the crotch, and roll the top band down if you prefer it not to be over the belly button (though I don't think it really matters).

Edited because all kinds of typos! One word: proofreading.

ETA: I noticed that Pampers Swaddlers size newborn has shorter straps, so I switched to Huggies Little Snugglers which was much better until about 9 1/2 pounds which is when I switched back to Swaddlers to size 1's.

  • I don't see a problem with going to size 1's. The hospital here doesn't even stock NB size. Just fold the top down to make the legs smaller as you would with a cloth diaper.
  • I've had mine in 1's since 7lbs. When you go to put the diaper on, open it up first and get the leg ruffles smoothed out. For some brands like huggies, if the ruffles are tucked in poop will sneak out.

Our baby was born at 9lb 14oz, and went down as low as 9lb 3oz, and newborn were always way too small for him.  Go up to size 1s :-)

I had major leakage issues with the Huggies Lil Snugglers. His pee kept going up his back. I've started to notice that the Pampers Swaddlers newborns are looking a little tight but the 1s seem so large!

Our girl was in NBs for less than a week. The 1s were slightly big for her at first but we just folded the top down to make them a little more snug. We got the blowouts with the NBs, not the slightly-too-big 1s.

  • Eden just started with size 2's yesterday because her size 1's were looking like that too. I put the tabs on going down diagonally and it makes the legs fit better. I put the tabs like this when she moved up to size 1 from nb also and it was only a week or so before I could do the tabs normally. We use pampers swaddlers.

Same for our baby. Newborn looked too tight but ones are too big. We got more newborns and are going to make them looser until he grows into them. Awkward....

When he grew out if pampers swaddlers NB size we used huggies naturals in size 1 at first... They seemed to be a little smaller than huggies snugglers size 1 and pampers swaddlers size 1.
  • Like @Kyllarae‌ said - fasten the tabs down diagonally so they make a V shape on the front of the diaper. It tightens up the leg holes.
  • Liv is in NB still she's 6 weeks & 9 lbs 5oz. Size 1 is still huge...we tried, and I don't think she's uncomfortable in them, she's just long and lanky.
  • I agree with the folding down of the top flap - it helps to tighten around the thighs. We are using cloth diapers 90% of the time, and when we use disposable diapers, we use regular Pampers size 1 or 2 (not Swaddlers). Our LO is just shy of 12 lbs., 26.5" long, and wearing 6 mos. jammies - he seems huge compared to all of the other A14 babies. He was 9 lbs. 5.3 oz. and 24.5" long when he was born.

    "G-Unit" born - 4/14/2014 and he's 100% perfection!!
  • I've noticed different brands of diapers fit different shaped babies. (Taller, rounder, ect) might be worth trying a different brand of size ones

C's the same weight, but I don't think he's quite as long.  We had a hot spell last week so he slept in just a onesie.  It cooled off this week, and when we went to put him back in his 3-month jammies, none of them fit!  So we pulled out the 6-month jammies.  We've had him in size-2 diapers for a few weeks, and I couldn't imagine him in 1's anymore.

Totally! From just today I can tell she's so much more comfortable. I feel horrible I had her in them for so long and she was prob miserable! Poor girl!! The size one swaddles are working great!

Huggies size 1 works well as a step up from pampers newborn because they are very trim. They didn't work for my guy for a few other reasons, but the fit is awesome and works better than pampers size 1.
