Clicking?

LO sometimes makes a clicking noise while nursing. She was just born Thursday, and my milk isn't in yet so I don't think it's OAL. Other thoughts? Her latch might tend to be be a little shallow sometimes but I unlatch and retry, after the initial latch feeding doesn't hurt.

Thanks!

I think clicking usually means LO is sucking in air so her latch may be a little off.

My LO clicks, it is her tongue tie. Get her checked out to see if it is a tie, and if it should be clipped. Hers can't be clipped unfortunately.

Pretty sure there's no tie. I'll have pedi confirm though, thanks!

  • My LO did that also and was thought to be due to shallow latch. She did better with reclined or laid back nursing to get a deeper latch until she figured it out. She still occasionally does it while distracted but relatching her seems to help. Good luck!

  • My DS was clicking while trying to suck down thick colostrum... Suck, suck, suck, swallow... I would hear some clicking going on. It has gone away now (DS was born on Tuesday).

  • Just a thought...my pedi said DD didn't have a tongue tie. Sometimes they don't know what they're looking for. We got an opinion from a pediatric ENT who diagnosed an obvious tongue tie and upper lip tie.
I'd assume the clicking was from a latch issue, maybe she just needs to learn what she's doing, or maybe tongue tie.

This. I LOVE our pediatrician but she missed DD's lip tie at her first appointment. I actually noticed it on day 9 and called to tell them. After I showed them the LT, they agreed. They said she did not have a posterior tongue tie. In the past 24 hous, I have learned that the two practically go hand in hand and it's rare to have an ULT and not a PTT. Long story short, we are going else where for another opinion about the PTT.

But, as far as the clicking, that normally comes from a bad latch. When you hear that noise, remove the mouth from your nipple and relatch.

My pedi missed my LO's tongue tie too. They said "oh just feed her formula, the important thing is she keeps growing" and had little regard for my breastfeeding relationship.

When I saw a LC and then an ENT, they both saw the tie immediately.

  • This might get the little ranty and crazy, so I apologize in advance!

Later this week, we are taking my eight week old to have her upper lip tie (and possibly tongue tie too) lasered by a pediatric dentist who is very highly regarded as an expert in this area. My pediatrician is not the one who caught the upper lip tie, my friend (who has two kids with ties) is. In general, pediatricians/LCs/ENTs aren't doing a good job identifying and correcting lip or tongue ties in babies. The tragedy is many moms will suffer for months and months with nipple pain, supply issues, poor weight gain, and overall frustrations before getting the TT/ULT diagnosis.
