Cloth Diapering

Cloth wipes set up

I know there are different ways to use the cloth wipes and I know my way is not working out the best for us right now! We've just been using dry wipes and bumgenius spray-spritzed either on the wipe or on the bum. For tough to tackle messes, sometimes I just grab the disposable but I'd rather not and figure out a way to make the cloth easier.

How do you keep your wipes moist? Regular wipe tub? Or do you dunk them in something before using? What kind of solution? What do you take with you in the diaper bag?

Thanks!

I have an OXO wipes container. I mix 2 cu. of pre-boiled water with a couple drops of wipe solution (I think the brand I have has been discontinued) and a squirt of witch hazel, then add wipes. They're damp enough to help make wiping easier, but not so wet that they leave a lot of water on the skin. You may need to experiment with your water to wipes ratio to get an amount of wetness that works for you.

ETA: when we are out, I just take 3-4 wipes in a slim Skip Hop wipes container. That's usually enough. The container came with a changing pad that we got as a shower gift. If I need more wipes (or I'm packing for a trip), I have a small PW wetbag that seems to work pretty well. If we ever have a second child I'll probably just use that for out-and-about, as I expect I'll probably want to have more than 3-4 wipes in the bag.

  • We keep our wipes dry and have a spray bottle of water. I might try making some wipes solution with tea tree oil or something, but right now the water is working just fine. We have pretty large wipes (Bumkins brand) so I try to just spray half of it so I can wipe up the mess with the wet part and then use the dry side of the wipe to make sure he is really dry before the diaper goes on.

We use plain water in a peri bottle (one for home, one for the diaper bag). I find I can easily saturate the wipe for tougher messes and/or leave part of the wipe dry if I want to. For me it's easier than worrying about cleaning out a wet wipes container periodically but I'm pretty lazy.

  • I like to keep my wipes wet b/c I was making huge messes with the peri bottle. I use a regular Munchkins wipe warmer and put my wipes in it using the half-over-half-over-half folding method PP mentioned. Our wipes usually don't stick too bad, but I also favor rather thick wipes so that might make a difference. I wet them with plain tap water from the sink. When they run out, I dry out the warmer to keep fungi at bay. We've never had a problem although I was paranoid about it at first.
