silly question- faking LO's sickeness

Next week I have an interview in another district for a teaching position at 2:30.  My last class is over at 1:30, then I have my prep.  My plan is after my students leave I'm going to tell my principal that either a- I've felt horrible all day and need to leave early, or b- I just got a message from DC and one of my little ones are sick and need to go home.  I feel horrible lieing about one of my kids being sick.  I don't want them to be my scapegaot and I don't want to wish any illness upon them.  I also feel really awkward pretending to be sick when I'm not, acting all moppy and so weak I just can't pull it through another hour without even having to deal with students.  I would take the day, or a 1/2 a day, but it's the day after a holiday and we need a doctor's note if we take off.  WWYD?

I'd say you have an appointment. Your principal shouldn't pry too much. In fact, I don't think she/he legally can ask for details. You really DO have an appointment. So this is not too much of a lie. Good luck!!

  • If I thought my boss would buy the "I've got an appointment " excuse, that would be my go to. Next, I would play off me being ill (but that would be hard if you are ok all day long). Last resort would be to use the kid. I believe in karma but it's not as if you are telling a lie to go get a pedicure or go to the movies. You're trying to better yourself/ your family with a new job. A justifiable reason IMO.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • Could you say that you have to go home to meet the plumber, AC service guy, etc.?

Could you say you've developed a migraine & really need to go home since they can come on quickly?  That way you don't have to act mopey & sick all day & you don't have to use your LO's.

  • I would use my Los so there's ok suspicion about how sick I am. Or I'd schedule a doctors appointment for something dumb and take a half day.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I don't like using the sick kid excuse not really because I believe in karma but because I believe in statistics.  We high five any week where one of them is NOT sick so I just can't add to the inevitable true sicknesses that'll make me miss work.

  • I'm a teacher also- I would call in sick period. You would be less stressed for the interview. I wouldn't take the chance of faking the baby is sick. What if you were seen by someone you knew at the new school?
  • Just say you have an appointment and have to leave. You do have an appointment. There is no need to lie.

I've made up excuses before even that LO is sick.  Sometimes it is just easier to do that than to divulge the real reason.  As long as you don't abuse it, I don't see the problem.

I've done it too.  I do wonder if I'm jinxing myself, but so far, so good :)  Although like PP's said, I think you could just say you had an appt and leave it at that.

  • I don't see any real harm in saying daycare called and you need to pick your LO up.

This! If your boss pries further just say that they have a fever. There was actually a time where ds had a fever and I had to come get him. He was fine by morning. A week later when we were at the doctors fora regular check up the ped said it could have been from teething or him just fighting off a little virus. Either way he was fine by the next morning.

Still I don't think you need to explain anything further other than daycare called and you need to go pick up your little one. Let your boss leave it up to her/his imagination.

  • Honestly, I would just call in for the whole day so you have time to prepare before your interview.
And say food poisoning! No one disputes that one, it's gone in 24 hours and you don't need a Dr's note :)
