Do my numbers "have" to double???

I'm about 5 weeks pregnant and Monday my HCG level was 884.  By Wednesday they had went up to 1374 (which isn't double). :( The nurse said my Dr. would've liked the number to be higher but she thought they'd be over 2,000 in no time.  I'm scheduled for another blood test today, so I'm hoping/praying the number is up.

Is it a big deal if you don't double every 48 hours?  God, I just want to quit worrying that this lil' thing isn't going to stick.  I'd really love to just relax and start telling certain people that we're pregnant, but every time I turn around, it seems like my confidence gets yanked out from under me again.  Ugh!

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Do my numbers "have" to double???

  • Here's what I found:

Basically it says if your HCG is lower than 1200, it should double every 48-72 hours.
If your HCG is above 1200, it should double every 72-96 hours.
Once it's above 6000, it should double every 96 hour or so.

    Hope that helps!

  • I second PPs info. I know personally mine doubled at less than 48 for 2 consecutive betas, but that was at 4w, 4w4d, and 5w. Everyone is different and unfortunately there's really nothing to do other than wait. FX this is your sticky baby!

48-72 hours is the norm. I just had my fourth beta today and it didn't exactly double in 48 hours, but my RE was happy with it. My betas are: 104, 240, 505, 936. I still haven't reached over 1000!
It seems like you have strong numbers. Every person is different and every pregnancy is different.

Out of curiosity do you remember your beta numbers? I know everyone's are different and the important thing is that they double. I just got my first yesterday at 4w and it was 14. Super low but we will see what my 2nd results are on wed.

  • My RE said they should rise at least 60%. I have always gone more by what my RE says than my regular OB.. for some reason I just have a tad bit more faith in him.

With my last baby, my OB said it should double in 72 hours so she would draw my blood every 72 hours, not every 48. It was definitely less nerve wracking that way.

  • Not to barge in, but I'm curious.  Are beta's done for all pregnancies or just RE ones?  Only reason why I'm asking is because I haven't seen my OB yet and I hate needles (says the girl with 2 tattoos!).

I think they are typically done with REs and also sometimes when someone has had a previous loss/losses.

If your doctor has ordered the test yet, they probably won't do it. I believe that most doctors just do it in the beginning before anything would be visible on an ultrasound. For example, mine stops testing when your hCG gets to 1500 which for me was just about 5 weeks.

ETA: Oh you're only 4 weeks now...they probably won't do it. I think most OBs just do a pee test to confirm.

@MrsMCBMar2014‌ I didnt get any Betas done last time, I think its more a high risk, previous losses thing. Nobody seems in any hurry to draw me this time either. I think it would give me peace of mind to have numbers to compare/contrast with other posts.... but I don't have an RE here and havent picked an OB yet and have my first pg appt Tuesday. I would bet you can skip it, but they will need some blood eventually! :-)

I only got betas done with my 4th pregnancy and that's only because I had 4 losses in a row before that so we were closely following my levels. I haven't had betas done with anyone other baby I've had.

  • I do think it has to do with past losses too. We lost one last month before conceiving this one so I'm sure that's why she's watching my betas this time. I almost wish we weren't doing them though. It's just given me more to stress over. I just want to enjoy a healthy pregnancy without having more blood drawl every 48 hours. I wish she'd at least wait the 72 hours. I feel we'd have good chance of seeing great numbers then. I'm enjoying this long weekend but on the other hand, can't wait for Tuesday to see what my levels were on Friday. (Keeping fingers crossed). Hoping they're above 2,000 so she'll schedule another sonogram. : )
