bed underneath window

DD's big girl room will have a queen bed - big i know, but it fits okay (slightly big for a kids room but not bad) and it's great quality and we already have it and would have to get rid of it otherwise. anyway, i had been planning on having her bed along a wall, with the head of it only slightly underneath the window, coming out away from the window. i saw these perfect shelves that would be great in her room but in order for them to fit nicely i think i would need to put the bed the other direction - so that most of the bed is directly underneath the window. the top latch for the window should be high enough she wont be able to reach it for years. any reason you wouldn't do this? the bottom of the window is about 6 inches higher than the bed so she wouldnt be up next to the window or anything.

Re: bed underneath window

  • Is the window on the second floor or in the front of the house on the first floor? If so I would make sure you had safety windows in - ones that can't open past a few inches. I would also want them to be shatter proof. I am VERY overly precautious... I think paraniod is a better word actually.

My concern about your windows being in the front of the house on the lower level is that she could get out or someone could get in - (think Lindburgh baby - I told you I was paranoid!)

She will also jump on the bed eventually - we all did it! I would be afraid that she will hit the window and hurt herself if it breaks - hence the shatterproof windows.

In my bag: Nikon D90; 35mm 1.8, 90mm 2.8 macro (my fave), Lensbaby Composer with macro extensions. BFP after 13 cycles and one ectopic. Lost left tube 5/19/10.
  • we did it.  It was either that or cover the vent.  his room is shaped odd. The top latch is high too and he won't be able to reach it for a looong time.  The first time he shows interest in the window, we'll be sure to do what is necessary.  I'm not too worried about it.

second story bedroom. better in terms of intruders and eventual teenage sneaking out. worse in terms of what happens if somehow she ever manages to open the window. interesting thought about possibly breaking the window, i hadn't thought of that. my mom is pretty paranoid too, maybe i'll ask if she thinks its an issue :)

  • The only place for Nora's big girl bed is in front of two large windows.  We haven't set it up yet, but I have had these worries myself.  The bed is tall, so she'll probably be able to reach the latches on the windows.  However, the headboard is also quite tall.  I highly doubt she'd be able to get the window open at all.  We have old windows that are a huge PITA to open...DH can barely get them open most of the time.
  • This is a great post!  We also wondering about moving DD crib/soon bed under the windows.  And DS has had his bed in every position and it's currently under the two corner windows but he's 3 and the windows are 3 pane lifetime guarentee against breaking.  The locks aren't easy and then with the latch that is asking a lot of a 3 year old to open them :P
