Cried at work today

I hate when I do that. We had an ARD (sped meeting) for my DD (she is not in school yet but will be served by the school district.) She will be getting speech services for a delay that is impacting her intelligibility pretty significantly, for her age. I knew all of that, and all of the details that I was going to hear. Still, it is hard to sit in that chair and have them outline exactly how your child is not able to do what others her age can do. Plus, we talked about a physiological problem she may have that could be related to this, and it is not a small deal. Won't know more about that until next month. I couldn't help it and cried, and it was worse bc it was at my work. I got it under control but everyone could tell, and every time someone asked what was wrong I got going again. Like I am now. Edited to fix words

I'm so sorry. I would have cried too. Sometimes when you're hurting you just can't help it. Big hugs.

As everyone stated, hugs to you.  Remember, you are a GREAT mom and this is not your "fault".  Everyone needs different things/supports to help them do best.  I know accepting that is easier said than done.

I have also been on both ends (parent and teacher/school admin) of these discussions.  It's hard not to take it personally, but I try to remember that everyone simply wants the best for the child. That said, it's just really hard when it's YOUR child...so more hugs.

I'm sorry - hugs. I think anyone would have cried in that situation. T&Ps for getting the right teachers, counselors, and plans in place for your DD.
  • So sorry...I'm sure it was a hard meeting and I hate crying in front of others!
  • I'm sorry. I've been there several times. It's never easy to hear that your child is not typical or healthy, no matter how prepared you are. I always know that I will be down for a few days after evaluations and sped meetings.

  • Thanks, all.  I feel silly getting so upset.  In the grand scheme of things, speech is definitely not the worst thing we could be facing.  The physiological...well, we will cross that bridge when/if we get there. You just never want to hear that anything is "wrong" with your kid.  I also hate that she gets so frustrated when she isn't understood, and how she is starting to be more aware that she is saying things wrong.  I know that only good things will come of this.  Today sucked, though.
  • So sorry today sucked! It does sound like you have an excellent mind set regarding everything. I'm a speech therapist and can honestly tell you that 99.9% of kids LOVE speech therapy! The good news is that it was identified early and you are getting her the services she needs. If you have any questions feel free to bounce them off of me! Deep breath and one day at a time.
