Onesies under clothes?

CW is telling me I need tons and tons of onesies to put under baby's clothes. Uhhh, July baby in Texas. I'm thinking I just dress him like a normal person and check him fairly frequently to make sure he's warm enough in the AC and cool enough in the heat. Am i missing something? And I pretty much consider a onesie an outfit, with a swaddled blanket. Shit I wish I could roam around in a onesie.

Re: Onesies under clothes?

  • Why do they need to be under the clothes? I'd imagine the onesies alone would do well. A blanket too.

  • We're in PA but it gets sweltering in the summer. I'm guessing onesies and sleep sacks will do most of the time.

  • I only do onesies under clothes in the fall/winter months, not in summer it too hot.

In VA here, which is not quite TX but sure is sweltering in July & August. Sounds like way overkill to me, unkess you keep you A/C really frigid. Heck, we didn't even do onesies at first with DS (also a July baby), but just did snap tees and diaper. He was swaddled while napping, which was a lot of the day really.

  • I did this with my March baby, but don't plan to with this one. If she needs to be warmer we will use a light blanket.

  • I always thought a onesie was like a baby shirt....plus what is cuter then a baby crawling around in just a onesie. Nothing. Well except maybe a baby in a diaper and socks.

  • I plan on just the onsie and a light swaddle blanket for most of the summer. New England summers are hot & humid!!

  • I did the onsie under everything with my March baby, just not during summer. This baby will get the undershirt starting in the fall
  • I don't know about TX, but I've always just used white onesies as undershirts for DS. Always have. I put them under everything, and plan to with LO add well.

Now he's almost 5 and wears undershirts everyday too!

  • Yeah, I usually do undershirts under most things.. Esp with buttons, zippers, or graphics on the shirt. Granted I had a January baby last time.. But still, we have central air so it's usually pretty cool in our house in the summer too.

In AZ here...no way did I do this with DD1 (August 11 baby). She wore onesies with a blanket over her, during the hottest months. Even at night, she slept in a onesie and was swaddled in a flannel receiving blanket. It's too stinkin hot for that many clothes.

  • This is my first, so I wouldn't say I know what works yet. But, my plan is to do just a onesie and an aden + anias blanket through July and August. At night I am thinking of a long sleeve, footed sleeper (instead of, not in addition to the onsie) and a sleep sack. As it cools off in the fall, I will probably start layering a white onesie under more of an actual outfit for daytime and perhaps under the sleeper at night. We have hot summers and cold winters where I live and I generally like to keep my thermostat set to 71 in the day and 69 at night in both seasons.

I must be the odd woman out. DS wears a plain white gerber onesie under everything and always has. Sometimes in the summer we'd do just a carters onesie with shorts (without the white one underneath) but that's really only the hottest days. Granted, I live in Michigan so our hottest days are not nearly as bad as TX. And we have air-conditioning at home. I wear a tank top under everything year round myself, so maybe that's why I feel the need for DS to have two layers too?

This exactly. I always wear a tank top myself and DD always wore a onesie under everything. On hot days we had her wear those onesies that look like outfits.

We might layer at night depending how the summer goes. We live right next to the beach (I can hear sea lions barking all night long, those little bastards never shut up) and once the fog rolls in things get really cool really quick.
  • FTM and planning on doing this only at nights. San Diego is pretty chilly at night so I'll be putting a onesie plus his pjs. Other then that it'll just depend on how the day is considering this weather to be bipolar.
  • I've never done this with either kid and don't even know it was a thing. My SIL does with both of my nephews though. I like to limit laundry ;)

  • here they are obcessed with singlets under clothes - it's so strange

I was given a ton of them - we're supposed to put them under everything

I did end up using them in the beginning because dd was born in winter (and this baby will be too)

    but I find them odd.....https://www.bonds.com.au/baby/underwear/singlets-vests.html#isPage=2

I'm in MA and did a onesie under DD's clothes from around October to April. DH still thinks I'm crazy to put a onesie under her outfits in early fall/late spring but I wear a cami under most of my clothes so I don't think its overkill. With this one I plan to just put them in a onesie and light swaddle blanket (if that) until October or whenever we start to feel the chill.

It depended on the weight of the clothes he was wearing & if he was using a blanket or not. He stayed in sleepers most of the time to start with anyway. In the winter months I layered his clothes with onesies even when in the house bc the air is just cooler. Again, it depended on what he was wearing that day.

My work wouldn't let me access your link but I Googled.

So basically they want the baby to wear a wife beater under all their clothes?

  • During cool weather, I always put a onsie under every outfit.  It is definitely not necessary in the summer though.  I would stock up for chilly weather, especially once baby is in 2 piece outfits.

I, too, have always layered short sleeved onesies under two-piece outfits from October-March(ish). I always wear a cami myself and don't like it when the two-piece outfits or top/pants on a baby inevitably ride up...I figure it's drafty so another layer isn't going to hurt anything. I also layer SS onesies under cotton sleepers quite a bit in the winter because we keep our heat set at 65 at night.
  • Um...onesies ARE clothes.  Like a baby t-shirt.  If it's hot, they are good alone.  If a little cooler or you don't want baby's legs chafed by the car seat straps or whatever, pants over the onesie.  Other layers as needed.  And if you think of a onesie as an undershirt and don't mind going through the extra layer to the diaper, it's no skin off my nose. ;)

yup! I didn't want to say that term - but YES

I was like WTF - that's so weird??? I was given like 20 in each size as gifts of them and they insisted on them at the hospital under ALL clothes, so so bizarre.......

  • I did when it was a cool day but in the summer no. I was always told to dress the baby like you would yourself

  • I wear camis under almost every outfit I wear, and with DS, he always had a onesie or undershirt (in the summer, a "wife beater") under every shirt.  He was born in May sooo... When we were home he didn't always wear more than just the onesie, but leaving the house, yep!

For this LO, I plan on the same - they make tank top onesies with lace trim that look similar to camisoles, so I feel like it'll be normal for us since everyone else in the house wears undershirts also?
  • One of my co-workers told me (on an advise card) to wear onsies under clothes during the "b" months.  (SeptemBer, OctoBer, etc.)  Generally speaking it's good advice.  Obviously you could have an absurdly hot September or a really cold March.  Use common sense.  In the "non-b" months- onsies can totally be shirts.

I live in Ohio.  We have 4 seasons here-my Texas cousins live in a different world sometimes.
