Re: Do you sterilize bottles/pump parts?

  • I think I'm in the minority. But I sterilize bottles between uses (I have enough bottles for a whole day so just once a day) and pump parts once a day. I would sterilize pump parts less frequently but where I use them at work and just store them in the fridge, and I just hand wash them, I'm more comfortable sterilizing every day.

  • Sort of...I bought an Avent bottle sterilizer at a second hand store for 10 bucks so I sterilize the bottles about every third day and hand wash them in between.

My pump parts, I store in the fridge and everytime I run the dishwasher (which is about every third day as well) I put them in and run it on high temp wash.  I figure thats good enough.

  • Hot soapy water only for everything. And I may have just did a hot water rinse a time or two ;)
  • Sterilize out of the package and I used to once a week. Now it's like once a month! Hot soapy water after every use though.

  • Damn I should have voted for "some but not others". I found mold in my pump parts when DS1 was 2 months old and I had to throw away my entire freezer stash. SOOO yeah now I always sterilize my pumping parts (but not bottles).

if by sterilize always you mean soapy wash right out of the box, but a hot rise off for almost all washes after... yes.

lol. no. they make it through the dishwasher maybe once every other week. 90% of the time I rinse them well. the other 9% is soapy hand wash.
  • My pump instructions (hygeia q) said not to put parts in the dishwasher as it could warp/ decrease longevity. They recommend hand washing with hot water and mild dish soap, so that's what I do. I wash (glass) bottles the same way or put them through the dishwasher.

I think I'm a weirdo now.... I sterilise bottles after every use and for the pump I used to do it every time, but dropped down to every other time now and feel awkward about that even!

I was just doing the hot soapy water scrub but since he got thrush I sterilize both bottles and pump parts after every use. I just use the microwave sterilizer bags so it's easy.

  • While we were in the NICU I sterilized my pump parts ALL of the time - hospitals are gross! But now, I'm not pumping very often so I just hand wash in hot water.

Sterilize after opening the box. Boil in hot water once a week. Wash with soap and hot water after every use.
  • Hah, am I the only one who finds them LEAST gross out of the box? I rinse in hot water the first time and handwash in hot&soapy after that. We don't have a microwave and I am SO not boiling those puppies for ten minutes.....

  • I hand wash in hot soapy water daily after work which includes bottles she used for the day and my pump parts and pump bottles. Weekends I put everything in the dishwasher and push the sterilize button (so that counts as sterilizing right?)
  • I sterilize out of the box. Then wash with hot soapy water after every use. Then I sterilize once a week. Although I didn't this week when we were away.

Gross!! I think that's why I'm keen to be so hygienic with expressing... I donate to local hospitals (over supply) and freeze a lot so I can finish pumping early and still feed her my milk. No way do I want to chuck it or risk passing on dodgy milk....

Yes.  Everything before every use.  But we use the dishwasher sanitzation setting for the bottles and only have to do it once a day.  With twins there are 22 bottles and it;s a pain in the ass to wash them right away so they go in a tub and then we do them all at once.

With the premies we are just super careful.  In a  month or so we won't be so diligent.

  • I guess I'm a freak. I sterilized out of the box, wash with hot water and soap throughout the day, and sterilize everything (bottles and pump parts) once a day.

They just seem fatty and gross otherwise.

  • I voted ss- I wash everything in hot soapy wash every day and sterilize about every other night. Bottles only get sterilized if i also need to wash my pump. I sterilize everything out of the box too.
