Registry checklist?

Can anyone point me to a good website that will tell you what/how much of everything you need?  I'm bored at work and working on our registry and don't want to register for too much crap that I don't need.

Thanks!

PS - I have the Lucie's List recs already!

Re: Registry checklist?

  • BRU gives you one when you go to register but if I remember correctly they had a TON of shit on there that wasn't necessary.

Yeah, I'm looking for one that's more "real".  Like, "Yup, you actually DO need this.  You don't need 200 of these."  I'm sure BRU and BBB are going to recommend you register for every.single.thing.

  • Pregnant chicken just had a post on this !!! It wasn't exactly "you need this much of this" but it was geared towards how to involve the gift - buyers to get you what you really need in a fun way

That was a poor explanation. Sorry I'm on my phone or else I would post the link

If you have Pinterest there are quite a few good ones on there. The bump also has one. Also, make sure to look at post pardom lists for yourself. You probably won't want to register for those but it's a good idea to look and see what you need :)

I've never seen the Lucy's list one before but I'm going to check it out. I'll report back ;)
  • Thanks!  I always forget about Pintrest.  I'll check out the Pregnant chicken too.

I looked at that lucies list web site and it just pissed me off. Hardcore. Maybe the emails are better but a simple list would be nice.
  • @Maelara - Really?  So many of my friends rave about it.  I signed up and got the recommendations list but other than that I haven't really done much.

I was annoyed by this too at first. It's organized, but it could be better. And it's not really a list, it's more of a site that just gives pros & cons of the top recommended items. I think I have a carseat picked out from reading her reviews, but that's about the only thing (yet) I found helpful.

    I like this list:

    https://www.housemixblog.com/2013/04/08/newborn-essentials-checklis/

    My only changes would be:
    - get more than one hat, especially as our babies are going to be winter babies. I would have one for the car, one for the diaper bag and one or two for the house.
    - get more than 2 change pad covers. You can go through those is two minutes. I found having 4 to be good. Same goes for a bassinet. I only had 2 sheets for my pack and play and crib because by this time they USUALLY spit up and poop less.
    - have a blanket or two just for the car.

    And @missnacholover‌

I like that the web page goes through the pros and cons of important things like car seats, strollers, carriers, etc. but an actual list would be nice too. You can look at those recommendations after you look at a list.
  • She hasn't given it to me yet, but a friend promised to give me a copy of her registry list that she used to help. If I get it I will post!

Also, when I was a FTM I went crazy with cute newborn outfits and 0-3 month outfits. I only ever used sleepers, onsies sometimes. I don't mind sleepers with snaps but the ones with zippers are a god send! They make life at night (especially when trying to do a stealthy diaper change) much easier. The early stages was also the only time I found a wipe warmer useful. You aren't putting a cold wipe on a sleeping baby's tush. However, the warmer dries out the wipes and can cause the baby to expect warm wipes which can create a problem

  • I totally agree with everything @Maelara‌ said!!

Also, we never saw a need for a bottle warmer. I nursed but even when I didn't putting the frozen milk (still in the bag or bottle) in a larger piece of tupperwear and running hot water over it worked just fine.

Here is a pretty decent one.  It takes the ridiculously long BRU list of baby needs and narrows it down.  I don't agree with all of it, but it's a good start.  Things I would change - my full size stroller is lightweight so no need for two; video monitor over audio; add basic sippys, spoons, etc.; I registered for a high chair and convertible car seat and received both; no need for a mobile or diaper stacker.... there are more but its also individual preference.  Just thought I'd throw it out there.

    - have a blanket or two just for the car.

A few changes I would add:

Nix the hooded towels, they are virtually worthless. (I do like the baby washcloths though, since they are thinner and not as rough as regular washcloths.) We just use a regular bath towel.

Nix the scratch mittens. We never needed them, but I've heard socks on the hands work better.

Crib bedding - Buy an extra mattress pad, make the bed in layers: sheet, mattress pad, sheet. That way in the middle of the night when there's a mess, you just have to take a couple layers, not remake the bed.

If you're using pacifiers, get a lot more than 4 once you know what baby likes. Keep extras stashed baby's room, diaper bag, your purse, etc. The binky gnomes are always stealing/hiding pacifiers!
    Yes!!

I actually like my hooded towels, lol! But they aren't needed, you're right! I used scratch mittens a lot but I was afraid to cut her nails but that's just me.

I've never done that with crib bedding, that's such an awesome tip! Even us STMs can learn new things ;) as for pacifiers, I think 4 (maybe even just 2) of each kind is probably a better recommendation until you know what your child likes. Helpful tip - the pacifiers with the straight nipple (like in wubanubs) are the best nipples for encouraging breast feeding :)

  • It does seem very overwhelming.   I am hoping that when DH and I go to do it,  he will be able to help me out.....but his daughter is 13.....so I am sure there are things now that didn't even exist then.

I think I am going to do what others have suggested in previous threads,  I will go to the stores, go apeshit with the scanner gun,  then clean it up online,  maybe add or delete items from the internet.

This list is fantastic. It's very in depth. There are a couple things I think you need that she has crossed off but it's a great list for the most part. I don't like that first aid kit is crossed off. For the house, sure, but make sure you have a little one in your diaper bag and one in your car :) I second getting a video monitor over an audio one. It has saved my sanity more than a couple times.

I'm actually going to bookmark this page. I can't believe BRU recommends you get ALL that stuff! That's pretty ridiculous!
  • Just keep in mind too that you can order a lot of stuff online or your husband can go out and pick stuff up after you bring the baby home. I felt such a need to stock up to be totally prepared and then ended up having a lot of the wrong stuff.

Examples- I didn't buy a ton of newborn stuff bc they kept telling me my baby would like be 8lbs or more at birth. We had a small pack of newborn size diapers and a bunch of 0-3 month size sleepers and outfits.  She ended up being 6 lbs and thank goodness the hospital sent us home with some preemie size diapers bc even the newborn size was HUGE on her.  And then I had to go shopping for a few preemie and a bunch of newborn size sleepers.  I had all these cute clothes for her and honestly just left her in sleepers most of the time because they were easy and kept her warm (Dec baby).

Also- things like bottles/pacifiers/etc- like others have said- don't invest in too much up front bc your baby may need to try out a few before they find one they like.  Thankfully mine wasn't picky but I know mom's who went through 6 brands of bottles before finding one their baby would take.

Lol, I sent my DH out for so much stuff! I had a csection so it was hard to go anywhere the first couple weeks. Lots of people also told me to only get like 1 small bag of newborn diapers because 1s are similar. Well, DD swam in 1s and I ended up using two BOXES of newborn diapers and needing a bunch of newborn sleepers. It's hard to know with those kinds of things what you will need until the baby is here!
  • Thanks everyone!  These are all great tips!  You all rock!

So true!  Me and AmazonMom/Prime got acquainted REAL quick- it's amazing how much stuff you can have delivered right to your door in 2 days!  And there's always a 24 hour drug/grocery/big box store somewhere nearby if you can't wait that long!!

And I had the opposite of @sunflwra‌ - they told me baby would be about 6 pounds, he came out just shy of 8 pounds and only fit in newborn size clothes for a week! You just never know! Even doctors are just making guesses how big baby will be. (And that was even after I had an ultrasound at 36 weeks, they said his size was 10th-15th percentile. Nope!)

  • @abbyful - you'd think in this day and age that ultrasound technology would be a little more precise than it is.  Our final growth scan was at 32 weeks and they told me that the baby was measuring approximately 7 lbs plus or minus 1 lb.  I HAD 8 WEEKS TO GO!!  I ended up being induced at 38.5 weeks due to high blood pressure and bc they already thought she would be large- Brynn was born at 6lbs 12oz. Even my doctor admitted that she thought she'd be bigger. Just seems crazy to me that they aren't more on target these days.

If it's helpful to anyone- find out how much you and your SO weighed when you were born and that will probably give you a good idea of where your baby will be.  I was mid 6's and DH was low 7's- so Brynn was just about in the middle of the two.

Totally agree about gowns!  I loved them, although DH wasn't a fan - he called them "man dresses".

I loved Lucie's list!  I did mine based on that, but off the top of my head, here is what you absolutely need:

diapers - newborn size grow out of quick, size 1 less quickly, mostly in size 2 and 3 for the rest of the first year
wipes - don't get in bulk until you are sure baby is not sensitive.  DS gets diaper rash with pampers, for example.
receiving blankets - can never have to many blankets, esp for a winter baby.
swaddlemes and halo sleepsacks if you plan to swaddle - usually the baby will let you know if they don't like this
Aden & Anais blankets are also great to swaddle or just to use as breathable blankets.
onsies - size 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9.  I got two packs of 5 of each size so that I could do laundry once a week
Gerber cross chest button undershirts - need these until the umbilical cord falls off
    bibs
    burb clothes
pacifiers - if you intend to use one
    pacifier wipes
hats - a must for a winter baby if you live in an area that is cold
    socks
sleep n plays - zip up are the best- easy to change baby at night
    carseat - love my britax
stroller - got the bob motion, compatible with the britax, awesome stroller, easy to fold and unfold, light, easy to steer... - test drive this sucker at the store before you select on.
    bouncer
swing - we got the mamaroo, and DS loves it.  Used it from about 2 months to present.
diaper bag - whether its a backpack or a top of the line bag, you need something to carry all their sh*t around in.
My Brest Friend pillow - if you breast feed
breast pump - if you breast feed.  Most insurance providers provide one for free.
    boopy
baby carrier, like the Ergo - now have the Ergo 360 - amazing! Baby can be worn facing out.
Crib (& dresser and/or changing table)
    Crib mattress
    crib sheets
waterproof liners for under the sheets (carters Keep me dry crib pads)
Rock n play or bassinet if you plan to have baby in your room for a bit
Pack n play (add the separate thicker mattress.  PNP comes with the worst mattresses).  I got the one with the changing table and bassinet.  I used the bassinet for a month, and the changing table add-on was awesome for middle of the night changes, until we moved LO to his crib at one month.
A play mat - the kick n play is amazeballs.  We call it the crackmat.  DS is on that thing for an hour sometimes and loves it.
    First aid kit
    Thermometer
Nose Frida - sounds gross to sucker boogers out of your LO's nose, but this ish works! use salien drops with it to loosen the boogies.
baby bath essentials - I stuck with Johnsons &johnsons
Sound machine - I have the graco sweet slumber.  Has lullabies, womb sounds, general white noise and volume control.
Video monitor - great to see baby, and you can turn down the volume if you have company, etc.

    Extra fun things:
rattles, books, Sassy toys; Freddie the Firefly!!! - DS loves this!
    Sophie the giraffe teether
baby spoons - get soft tipped.  When they start to teeth, the hard plastic tip ones hurt their gums.
baby dishes - suction cup bottoms are great so LO can't throw them across the room.  le sigh.
High chair - you will not need until LO can hold head pretty well, usually around 3 - 4 months.  I highly recommend the Graco Blossom
Diaper Pail - some dont't think this is necessary, I do. I have the arm and hammer diaper pail and never have an issue with smells, we change it twice a week.
Travel sound machine - I have the cloud b sleep sheep
Breathable crib liner - we needed this around 5 months when DS started moving around in his crib and would get legs and arms caught in the bars.
backseat mirror - I have the Britax Mirror. LOVE- I can see DS from my rearview mirror plus it gives him something to do and look at.
Jumperoo - we have fisher price jungle one.  DS started using it around 4 months.  loves it and I get about a half hour out of him in this.

    DONT NEED
Wipe warmer - YOu don't want LO to get used to the luxury of a warm wipe.  In the beginning when they scream bloody murder at every diaper chagne no matter what you do, I blew on it to warm it up some.  They stop screaming in a couple weeks ;)
Bottles - maybe get a few sample bottles.  I went through EVERY BOTTLE trying to find one DS liked.  Dr. Browns for the win here.  If you are going to buy a set, get these, because you have an increased chance LO will like them.  Avent are also pretty popular.
baby size bath towels - seriously, your adult towels work just as good, if not better.  Bigger, more cozy and more absorbent!
Compforter set - yes, its cute, but you cant use half of it until way later, so add it if you want, but its not a necessity at all.

receiving blankets - can never have to many blankets, esp for a winter baby.
swaddlemes and halo sleepsacks if you plan to swaddle - usually the baby will let you know if they don't like this
Aden & Anais blankets are also great to swaddle or just to use as breathable blankets.
onsies - size 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9.

Wow! You must have a crazy good memory for that being off the top of your head!! My only disagreement with you is the bottles. I so agree for each mom to try out different ones as each baby will like a different bottle. However, I feel I should warn FTMs about Dr. Brown bottles, they have a million small pieces. We had one of these and I hated it. We use the playtex drop in liner bottles for DD. All of my friends and family prefer these ones too :) there is additional cost with the liners but they don't cost a ton. The new ones actually have a variety pack of all sorts of different nipples and they are so easy to clean. I used to spend 30-45 minutes every night cleaning bottles and now it's 5-10 minutes every night. The Avent ones are popular but they create a lot of gas for the LOs which can make them super grumpy. I never bought a comforter set and don't regret it. I bought a cute blanket at the farmers market and it's what we use now :)
  • Im loving this thread, the links and the suggestions. Especially now that I have a little more energy and am up for really researching all this!

@maelara 0 lol! DS is only 5 months so its pretty fresh! I just went off what I use every day!  Agree, Dr. Browns has a lot of parts and it blows! I forgot I did try the drop in liners and they were a dream to clean! I just could never tell how much LO was drinking.  He did like those nipples and they did prevent gas.  Those are a great recommendation!

@laurasue0513‌ (cutting down on the tree quote) That makes since if your DS is 5 months!! I will agree that it's difficult to determine how much you LO is getting with those liners! I just unscrewed the top a bit and give it a shake and they will reinflate and it's much easier to tell :) I have heard many, many good things about Dr. Brown, which is why I bought one! I'm just lazy and hated cleaning the darn thing! It's nice that they come with their own brushes for those small pieces though :) and they have glass options if that is preferable to moms!

I just got the Lucies list email and it seems to be pretty awesome :) I keep forgetting exactly how much you need for a new baby. Thankfully I have most of it already! If you plan on having more than one child, I highly suggest getting all your big ticket items in gender neutral colours.
  • Thank you everyone - this is soooo helpful!!!

If it's helpful to anyone- find out how much you and your SO weighed when you were born and that will probably give you a good idea of where your baby will be.  I was mid 6's and DH was low 7's- so Brynn was just about in the middle of the two.

    Oh good lord!
I was 8lbs 6oz at 3 weeks early and DH was 9. I'm only 5' tall. What am I going to do?!
