Boiling/washing pump parts?

I use the medela pump in style. I basically just cracked it open and started pumping. Today I found the instruction booklet with all the recommended boiling/washing and I am feeling pretty foolish! Are you all following the instructions exactly? How much wiggle room are you giving yourselves? I am thinking about buying the steam bags to save time since I am pumping 3+ times a day and already feel like I have no time to rinse the parts, let alone boil them!

I don't think you have to boil them every time. I think you are just supposed to wash after each use

  • There is a discussion about 3/4 of the way down entitled "Sterilizing" that asked the same question. Lots of good advice there.

But basically the consensus is that boiling is really only necessary prior to the first use and cleaning with hot water after each use should be sufficient. You can even put the pump parts in the fridge during the day in between and just was them at night or throw them in the dishwasher.

I can't tell from your post if you mean that you just started pumping without washing or sterilizing anything. If that's the case, I might ditch that batch. I'm by no means a clean freak but I wouldn't feed LO out of anything that wasn't cleaned first. That's just me. Maybe others will weigh in on that.

I just wash my pump parts with hot soapy water after every other use. I leave them on the counter in between - this was recommended by my LC.

I use the quick clean wipes when I need to pump in the middle of the night cause I don't have time or energy to wash at 3am.
I just wash with hot soapy water with a tiny bit of bleach in the water.

I use the sterilizing bags once every few days.
If you knew better, you'd do better.

I didn't boil my parts every time. I do have a steam sterilizer and drying rack. When I wen t back to work I bought extra "set ups" and I just washed/sterilized everything when I got home and was making dinner.
I had a really good system but it took a while to get my groove. You'll find yours in no time. :)

I put the parts in the fridge during the day after a quick rinse with hot water and then wash with soapy hot water once a day.
I have only serialized once (after first use) so far wIth the steam bag but I should probably do it more often.
