Best video monitor?

We didn't use a monitor for DS because his room is right now the hall from us .... the new baby will be going in his room, and he's moving to the downstairs bedroom. He'll be almost 4, but I'd like a video monitor because we'll be two floors away from him. Brands you love/ hate? What to look for/ look out for? Thanks!

I have a Motorola one -- the one with zoom and pan. I don't really ever use the zoom (it only "zooms" to 2X anyway, so hardly worth it). But I use the pan all the time to look around the room, not just the bed. It makes a quiet noise and is obvious when the camera is rotating which wouldn't wake a sleeping child but would likely be noticed by a curious older kid.

I have to say that I appreciate the video so much more now that DD is a toddler than I did for her as a baby. It's nice to be able to look and see if she's asleep or just being quiet since going in would inevitably wake her up.

We have a Motorola one too and no complaints.  I'm not sure which model it is (it's over a year old) but it doesn't pan or zoom.

  • We got the Motorola, too, but I'm a FTM so we haven't used it yet.

For those of you have one already - where did you put it in the room? That's what I'm trying to figure out now. Our dresser is a couple feet away, so I'm wondering if we need to put it on a shelf next to the crib or something?

@sarahg8r, ours is on the window sill probably 6-8 feet from the bed DD sleeps in. It's fine there, except that she can reach it to play with it. But she's 2...they don't start out messing with stuff.
  • Motorola MBP36 definitely two thumbs up! Our bundle came with 2 cameras. We mounted one on the wall above DS's crib and the other moved around to wherever we needed it (playroom, grandparents, vacation, etc). Now with DD on the way, the second camera will be mounted above her crib and we'll purchase another camera to be the mobil one (can have up to 4 cameras connected). I love the night vision, pan, and now that we'll have 2, the scan feature so it'll monitor all the connected cameras.

  • We have the Lorax share and care and love it. It has two way speaker so you could speak to your baby if you wanted to ( it freaked our toddler out so we don't use that feature), and it also has a night light and sound machine capabilities that you control from your end. Can have up to 4 cameras. We will have one in our older sons room, one in the play room and one in LO's room.

Be very careful about where you place your camera in regard to the cord. We read a very sad article about a kiddo that strangled herself in the cord. Not trying to scare anyone just something that we had never thought about.
