Just got put on bed rest/procardia ?s

I'm 28w5d with b/g twins. Appt yesterday revealed my cervix has shortened to below 2.5. Cx monitor showed irritable uterus. So now I'm on modified bed rest and taking procardia. I just feel so blind sided; I had no clue this was coming and was still feeling pretty good.

The side effects are no joke (headache, nausea, etc). Anyone else get put on procardia? Did the side effects get better? What was your outcome?

I have a recheck in a week when they'll also do a ffn test. Dr told me if that's positive, I'll be in hospital getting steroid shots.

*update*
Small update in case people search for procardia info in the future. Most of the side effects seem to have gone away thankfully. Still dealing with mild headaches that tylenol takes care of.

You've made it this far!  You got this!  I don't have any experience with it yet, but I just wanted to offer some encouragement.

Was your cervix shortening at all before that appointment?  Just curious.

  • My cervix started shortening at 16 weeks with my singleton ds. I had an emergent cerclage at around 19 weeks and was on bed rest and procardia for the remainder of the pregnancy. I was also on Indomethacin, I think just on the weekends. The side effects of the procardia did subside after taking it a little bit.

I made it to 34 weeks and would've went longer, but there was a cord issue and ds had to be delivered.

This time around I had the cerclage placed electively at around 13.5 weeks and it's holding strong at almost 21 weeks. Here's hoping [-O<

You've made it so far already!!! Just keep to the bed rest and take those meds. Sending you and your LO's tons of prayers and long cervix vibes!!!!!!

  • I don't have any experience with procardia but wanted to let you know you're not alone.

I have been on bed rest since 26 weeks weeks for a shortening cervix, when I went in on Friday for my weekly check I was at 1.2cm, at 26 weeks it had gone from 4cm - 2.8cm.  My doctor is giving me progesterone shots weekly and I had steroids about a week and a half ago.  It came as a shock to me too, even at this point I'm still feeling pretty good.

I wish you the best of luck and stay strong, don't push yourself at all.  Hopefully those babies stay put for you! T&Ps!

On May 2 it was 3.5. A month before I think it was still 4 something.
  • Similar experience. At 23 weeks, I was put on home bedrest when my cervix went from 3 to 2. I was admitted to hospital bedrest at 24 weeks when it went to 1.5 and I was having contractions that I could not feel. I had Procardia. The side effects start to ease up. I did progesterone suppositories and steroid shots as well. I also had to go on magnesium twice while in the hospital. I was discharged to home rest at 33 weeks. I stayed on the max dose of Procardia until the day before they were delivered at 36 weeks - totally healthy with no NICU time but a tad petite.

You have made it past the second major milestone. Your doctor is monitoring you and you are taking a very effective med. Good luck.
