I didn't have any pain with the 10 unit or 5 unit lupron (just itching), nor with the super easy to use follistim pen 75 unit injection. The menopur injection burned like one of the worst pains of my life. I heard it was going to sting but was in no way ready for what I felt. The 75 units of menopur + 1cc of saline dissolved together immediately and was at room temperature. We waited about 5 minutes prior to injecting. We didn't wait for the alcohol to dry 100% but it wasn't sopping wet either. Normally it was a non-issue with the daily lupron injections. I have heard the menopur pain varies for people. Mine was injected at a 45 degree angle into some belly fat. The pain was a burning, shooting sting that is similar to a general anesthesia injection but 10x worse (for me).
Since the pain was so intolerable, I called both my doctor as well as the on-call nurse from the specialty pharmacy for any tips. The nurse at my doctor's office said she wasn't sure reducing the 1cc to half would do anything because she wasn't sure if the sting occurs from. The nurse from the specialty pharmacy said that she has heard women have had success in reducing pain by using 1/2 a cc with the 75 units of menopur. She also suggested ice and confirmed that a 90 degree injection angle is ideal. She said belly fat would be less painful than the outer thigh injection and icing the area 10 minutes before could possibly help.
Night and day difference on the second night since I did the following:
Let the menopur mixture sit for 15 minutes before injecting
ice the area 10 minutes before injecting
allow alcohol to completely dry before puncturing the skin with the needle
inject only 1/2cc instead of 1 cc
ensure the injection is done much slower
massaging the area after injection
With all of the above taken into account, my pain was not that far off from a flu shot injection. I suppose this solution doesn't work for everyone but I wanted to share because I feel so much better with the info I got. I'm not a doctor and its important to double check with a medical pro before changing up anything even if its just the liquid solution for mixing.
Good luck ladies!
