Any mamas know anything about baby acne?

We have our 2 week doc apt this wed so I'm trying to wait it out. It all started with a blocked tear duct. LO had horrible eye crusties so I was wiping them away. Well I caused a rash or baby acne on his face so I decided to try coconut oil on it cus I read good things and it always seemed to work well for me. Well that made it worse. I also tried breast milk- nothing. Soap and water at bath time- nothing. It just seems to keep spreading and getting worse. :( anyone have any advice? I have done anything today and it still seems to keep spreading. I guess I'm just going to give up.

  • Are you sure it's the eye gunk that caused the rash in the first place? DD had a clogged duct as well and her poor little eye started to get infected so the pediatrician gave us some drops and told us to use warm compresses several times a day to keep the eye clean. It didn't cause any irritation or redness on her skin at all, even though I know the skin around the eye is super sensitive.

Could it be from your detergent or soap? Even if you are using special stuff for LO, they still come in contact with your skin and clothes. Just a thought if you haven't already eliminated that as a possibility.

Honestly, I wouldn't wait till Wednesday to contact the pediatrician if it continues to spread. I hope it goes away soon! Good luck!

  • The more I read online the more I think that the coconut oil caused the out break. I'm not sure tho but I will call tomorrow if things don't look better. I just feel so bad. :(

I feel like I could have written this. DS had horrible eye gunk and after using the medication prescribed by the doc, her face has broken out. She had the same breakout on her arms when she was born and the doc said it was totally normal and may spread...so this may just be that. She is going to the pediatrician but I would love to hear others experiences too...
  • Well baby acne on its own will spread and there is little you can do about it. It just happens as their body sorts its hormones out after being mixed with yours for so long.

Yeah baby acne is caused by mom's hormones still being in the baby's system. Most likely you didn't cause it to spread, it just does on its own. It will clear up on its own.

  • Sucks not being able to do anything :(
  • Dd had baby acne. There was nothing to do but wait it out. I did express some milk and let it air dry on her face. I had read that could help but I'm not convinced I saw a difference.

If the rash you're seeing is true baby acne, it will clear up on it's own. It's a good idea to rule out a reaction to the coconut oil or anything else baby may have come in contact with. Do you use fabric softener? Our pedi said many babies are sensitive to it.

Also, for the clogged duct: breastmilk, warm compresses, and light massaging of the area. Good luck! Hope you get it all figured out!

  • Lots of different types of bumpy baby rashes. Most harmless and don't bother baby rather than bothering mom so don't feel too bad about the coconut oil. But u could have UR pediatrician check it out
