Gestational diabetes testing abnormal results

I went for my 1 hour glucose test and the results came back 18 over the normal (my doctor says 130 but I've read 140) so I had to go for the 3 hour one. When the doctors called with the results for that one only one of the levels was abnormal but they told me I didn't have gestational diabetes but they wanted me to see a nutritionist. I went and saw they nutritionist and they're treating me as if I have gestational diabetes and they told me I have to check my blood sugar 4 times a day. I honestly can't do that because I'm not a fan of needles or causing any pain intentionally to myself so all I have done is changed my diet and watching my carbs. The doctor wants me to get a 2 hour postprandial blood test to see if I actually have to check my blood sugar. Has anyone else had this happen and what did you have to do? I only have 2 more months left and I know they're going to go by super quick but is it really necessary to go through all of this if I was only slightly over the normal?

Suck it up. It sucks for a lot of us, but you do it because it's the best for you and your baby. I've had horrible experiences with my practice (that were neither standard nor the correct treatments), but I've still been compliant, because it's not about me anymore

  • It might seem like "only two months," but for most people with GD that's when the symptoms and issues show up. You need to follow the doctor's advice, and as PPs said...suck it up. If you truly have GD, it can have some serious ramifications (like going into labor early because too much fluid and big baby make your body think it's ready when it's not). None of us dealing with this relish pricking our finger 4+ times a day, but we want to have healthy babies much more than foregoing any short-term finger pain.

    Simple answer. Yes.

  • I have an intense phobia of needles. I get the fear/anxiety of poking yourself. I do not get endangering the health of your unborn child and/or your own health in order to avoid facing your fear.

I am GBS+ and know I will have to have an IV in my arm for 4+ hours during labor. Am I freaked out about it? Yes I am. Have I considered not having the antibiotics because of that fear? No, because it's what is best for my baby and I will do whatever I can to ensure her health.

Time to put on the big girl panties and get that sh*t done.

  • Suck it up buttercup.

  • I have a fear of needles too but with checking your blood sugar you don't see the needle when it pricks u. I have had GD both pregnancies and it's not as bad as u think. But diet alone may not be working with out checking sugars. You might need medication too!! It can only help baby!! Good luck!!
  • Check your sugars! A baby just came into the NICU today from a mom with uncontrolled GD. 31 weeks gestation and she is HUGE. The baby girl was having all kinds of problems. Check your sugars for your LOs sake.

I detest needles...and i poked myself 4 times a day for 16 weeks with DD1. I learned REALLY quick to get the eff over it.

Do it for your baby, if not for yourself.

  • I'm with PPs. I've had to poke myself 3-4 times a day since 14 weeks and now I take insulin around 3 times a day. It sucks for sure, but you'll live.

I did the 2 hour test. I passed the fasting and 2 hour with flying colours, but failed the 1 hour by a tiny bit. A fail is a fail is a fail. I hoped I wouldn't have it, but my OB was like, it doesn't matter how close to passing you were, you didn't.

I hate saying it, but seriously suck it up. Like you said, you only have two months left! Better than doing it for six, or even longer.

  • Is this for real? I mean, I don't think anyone actually likes needles but... C'mon. There are women on this board, myself included, who have willingly gone through much worse for the sake of their children. They've even asked to have some of it done because they want the best.
  • Aiming for mother of the year award? I hate needles but I do it. Keeping an eye on it is more for her health than mine. Suck it up, if you are becoming a mom you are going to do a lot of things you don't like.
  • Seriously, I get that it sucks, but suck it up. There are a lot of gd women here, and we all manage fine, because we want what is best for our babies. You NEED to monitor your sugar, or you may be putting your baby through a world of trouble. My husband is a type one diabetic- as in, if he doesn't prick his finger 4+ times a day, take a shot at night and a shot every time he eats something, he will die. I'm pretty sure he thinks it sucks too, but he mans up and does it. And I think I can manage four finger pokes that literally barely hurt AT ALL in comparison. So far I'm not wrong.

That prick of the lancet doesn't hurt at ALL. As others said this is for your health and the health of your baby - don't be so selfish. My husband has T1D and has been testing himself since he was 5 years old (he's 34). If he just decided to stop testing, stop taking shots (well, he's on the pump) or eating whatever the hell he wanted, he could die. It isn't about convenience - it's about your life.

I had to test DD1 frequently when she was born and she didn't flinch or cry. If a newborn baby can handle it, so can you.
