Sippy Cups - LO REFUSES to drink from them

Hi All,

This past week I've transitioned LO (12 mos)  to wcm from formula, and also from bottles to sippy cups - except first thing in the morning, and last one at night is in a bottle. During the day he's cups only. For a few days he was drinking a few ounces with no problem. He was never a huge fan of the cups so I was pleased with his progress. Now, he will not drink from them. I've tried every kind of cup imaginable. Straws, no straws, soft tip, hard tip, handles, no handles, warm milk, cold milk, water, juice. Nothing. He's only drinking 14-16 oz of fluids for the last 2 days (first and last bottles of the day). I'm nervous that this isn't enough fluids.

I will call my pedi tomorrow, but just wondering if anyone can give me any insight on how to get him to drink from the cups. DH is telling me to give him a bottle but I'm afraid I will take 2 steps back if I do that. Obviously if I see him not looking well or feeling well, I will give him the bottle. He is eating fine I just feel like he should be thirsty.

TIA!

  • DS has never been a huge fan of WCM or water.  He is 18m, and on average, he drinks 8oz WCM and 8oz water total.  I was worried so I started making him a 10-12oz smoothie daily as snack (since he was around 13m).  He LOVES his smoothie and will down most (if not all) of it in 1 setting.  That's the only way I can get him to drink!  I use fresh fruits, 4oz wcm AND 4oz plain yogurt.

Pb my LO will drink anything - as long as it's in a bottle. My problem is getting him to drink the water or milk from a sippy cup.
Once he gets the hang of the cup, I like the smoothie idea to sneak in some more calcium and veggies.
  • I am having the same problem with my LO. She wants her water from her sippy cup and her wm from the bottle. She wont drink all her milk if I put it in a sippy cup, its like she takes a few sips and doesn't want it. I haven't done a bottle in a week and may have to sneak one in there for at least the morning. I as well will feel I am back tracking but am concerned she wont be getting enough fluids. Sorry I am not much help, hopefully someone will have some advice for the both of us.
  • My LO doesn't drink a whole lot either, so I do some of the same things mentioned above. Have you tried a squirt bottle type sippy? They have little juices with fun toppers at walgreens/gas stations. I just reuse the bottle.
  • My LO just doesn't drink much when we give her cups.  She downs a bottle right away.  She's always had a problem with constipation, and so her pedi said to just keep her on bottles but to make sure to brush her teeth.  It's working fine.  I think as it warms up, we'll just work on using a regular cup.  She does fine with those until she spills them all over.
  • I agree that it sounds like he's drinking plenty, but we had this problem when transitioning DS.  He didn't want anything to do with a sippy cup.  What we did was use the sippy cups with the straws.  He had no idea how to drink out of them at first, so we used juice boxes.  Put the straw in his mouth and squeeze it so that some liquid goes into his mouth.  Worked like a charm and we haven't looked back :)

  • My 16 Month old hates sippies/straws .. She will only drink from a regular cup .. We have our good and bad days. I just constantly keep offering liquids
