Cloth Diapering

Insert recommendations

So my one month old baby has already started outpeeing microfiber so it has become clear that all the inserts that came with my diapers are not going to cut it. I'm looking for something economical as I'm not going to spend almost as much money on an insert as on a diaper (so the $7-$8 inserts I've been seeing are not for me!) This baby is a heavy wetter, so I need something that is going to be really absorbant. I have some bamboo inserts but they aren't wide enough (they are homemade by my mom) for most diapers and leaks still happen. The couple bamboo inserts I have that are wide enough don't seem to be absorbant at all (they are Kawaii). I have ordered some prefolds to try those out as inserts.

My baby has skinny legs as well so I need to be careful about over stuffing because I get leg gaps.

Any suggestions? I appreciate it!

Re: Insert recommendations

  • So are you using One Size diapers already or are you using newborn size/size 1 diapers? If you are already usuing OS it could be that since he still has skinny newborn legs he is just leaking out of the sides before it can absorb. Are the inserts soaked when you take them out? When he is laying down point his legs up in the air and see if there are any gaps. If you want to try something else prefolds are a good choice. Osocozy Size 1 are economical and you can just get them to fit in the smallest rise of a OS diaper with a little finagling. I also use Alva bamboo inserts. I got them from Amazon. I also made my own inserts/doublers from hemp fleece. You can make them in any size you want. Mine are either 3 or 4 layer and they are 4" wide by 12.5" long.

I am using newborn diapers and the inserts are completely soaked. Where did you buy the hemp fleece? I don't mind making inserts (and would prefer it if it's cheaper!)

  • I also bought it on Amazon. I have Prime so by the time I paid shipping elsewhere it would have been about the same price. It's about $18 for a yard and I think you can get about 7 inserts with 4 layers out of it. They are super trim so you could actually double up with them in a diaper.

  • I just bought a 10 pack of bamboo inserts from Kawaii. I don't have a baby yet so I can't testify how well they work but they were affordable.

Sounds like a great idea! I think I'll try making some more with the hemp fleece.

  • Any chance baby could fit into OS diapers yet? NB diapers and inserts just aren't meant to hold much.

  • I love flats in pockets!
    Ok...I love flats in general.
  • Oh! How could I forget about flats! I like flats too. Both folded on a baby and folded in to a pocket.

Another for flats and fst. You can also get bamboo flats that absorb more :)

  • I had that same problem.  My now 5 month old daughter needs 10 layers of birds eye cotton AND a bamboo insert at night or else she is soaked in the morning.  I started making my own diapers and inserts because nothing I bought seemed to work.  I would try some birds eye cotton.  It takes a lot of layers, but is still trimmer than most microfiber inserts and holds a ton more.  If you can't find any inserts I'd be happy to make you one to try out.

Thanks everyone! I keep meaning to make a trip to walmart to get some flour sack towels but just haven't yet. I think I will make tomorrow that day!

I do use my OS flips with him (my flips are really the only ones he doesn't leak out of! My newborn pockets are what I'm struggling with) so it's possible he will fit into some of my 4.0s, I just haven't tried them yet. He's really only around 8 lbs. I don't mind the bulk at this stage though, it's kind of cute! I just cant have it be so bulky that he gets leg gaps. My prefolds I ordered are set to arrive tomorrow (osocozy ones) so I can't wait to prep and try them out too.

  • Yea, we were having a horrible time with leaking newborn diapers at that age. I used one of those doublers I made and that lasted until the 5-6 week mark when he could fit in to OS diapers. He was about the same size as your baby I think. You might be able to use the FST's or some baby wash clothes doublers until you get something else. I only washed the FST's once before using. That way they should be ready before your prefolds.
