What Timing! - Post-testing Consult w/ RE Tomorrow to Start Treatments, but Cyst Rupturing!?

After more abdominal/rectal pain than usual the past couple weeks, woke up this morning with quickly building unbearable abdominal pain. It felt exactly like 1.5 years ago when I was hospitalized for what turned out to be just a ruptured ovarian cyst.

This time it was as if last year's 12+ hours of increasing pain were fast-forwarded into 2 hours, and after a scary several minutes when I couldn't even breathe without feeling like it was ripping my insides apart, it is now slowly calming down as long as I don't move too much.

Pretty sure it's just a cyst again (O day was 2 days ago), and not a Crohn's disease intestinal emergency. I think it's okay to wait until Monday morning to call the GYN about an ultrasound and antibiotics. (Please do not hesitate to advise if you think it's more urgent than that - after the overreaction last time, I just feel wary of ending up with another 3-day hospital stay and $1200 OOP bill for no reason!)

The really frustrating part is that tomorrow morning is our post-testing consult with the RE. I have over 4 pages of questions that I am dying to have answered. I also worry that this would postpone starting fertility meds. Trying to take it one day at a time and not get too disappointed about the unexpected happening.

I am wondering, if I had a CD2 ultrasound, is it possible that a cyst somehow grew and burst between then and today (CD20)? Or perhaps the nurse wouldn't mention a cyst that was starting to grow large? The pain is radiating from the right side, not the ovary that looked like a strand of pearls - is that to be expected, or are polycystic ovaries more likely to rupture? Sorry to ask medical questions, I will call GYN and see RE tomorrow, but I was just hoping some TTTCers might have some insight. Thank you!

I'm sorry for the pain you are experiencing and hope you feel better soon.

I'm not as experienced with cyst as some people but I can give you my experiences. I've had a few rupture but mine have always been functional cyst.(I think that's what they are called). I get the after I ovulate, the follicles just fill back up and when I have a period they don't go away. So any cd2 us would show them. When they rupture it's so painful and I've passed out before but my Dr's have never done anything about it. I just take some pain meds and wait for it to go away. It usually takes a day or two before I feel better.

My experience is similar to @Pintobean39‌. I had a follicle rupture which I think is about the same thing. It was a couple days after my IUI and the pain was horrible! I took painkillers that I had left over from my surgery. I went in and did an u/s though and they confirmed through there that it ruptured. Maybe you could request that? As well as a px for pain. There's not much else that can be done. It is better to not move much because the pain is from the fluid moving around.

Is your office open on weekends? I would maybe call the in call person just to check.

@pintobean39 I'm sorry, that sounds so difficult! It's crazy that there isn't some kind of preventative treatment. Thank you for sharing.

@jencity9 I'm so sorry! Does your doctor think it happened after O because of the fertility meds you were taking, or it was just something that happens? Thanks for the advice about moving...I know it hurts to move but reminding myself it's just some innocuous fluid, not my insides falling apart. I'm afraid to even mention it to my RE because I don't want treatment to be postponed but of course I will because it's so important! Anyways, what's one more $300 ultrasound in the scheme of things?

Yeah it really sucked that I had to pay for an u/s just to see that lol. For me they are $150 which is not as bad but still a lot. If you already O'd though and it has already ruptured, you should still be fine for your next cycle. I was told it wouldn't affect the IUI I already had because I had other follicles. Who knows. Are you doing IUI or TI?

@jencity9 That is such good news, thank you! This month was (hopefully) our last (pointless) TI, and I'm assuming the RE will recommend IUI as our first treatment when we have tomorrow's consult.

I don't have any experiences with cysts, but I'd think if you are only on CD 20 that you could probably be fine by the beginning of your next cycle to do an IUI if you want. I'm sorry you're in so much pain! Good luck at your appointment!

I am no expert but it sounds very similar to a ruptured cyst. Definitely call your doc and have it looked at. I went in every other day to my RE for a week to have my cyst checked to make sure it was going down because the mofo was big.

I have had functional cysts in the past and it was much like @pintobean described. I had one for several cycles and it was terribly painful when it ruptured. I had it monitored monthly. Luckily I only had them on natural cycles when I was in my 20s/early 30s and nothing since starting fertility treatments. Hopefully it's nothing but I'm glad you are seeing your RE tomorrow. I'm sorry you are in pain
