Potty training

Yes, another potty training question. We have been putting DS into underwear to let him run around in at the house. While we are out we put him in pull ups but he thinks these are diapers so he just goes in them without telling us he has to go. At what point should we feel comfortable taking him out in public with his underwear? Also, shouldn't our goal be for him to tell US when he needs to go? If we tell him to use the potty, he refuses but if it's his own idea he gladly does it. I don't want to force him and hope that he will just tell us when he needs to go. Hmmm thoughts?

Took DD 3 wks to start telling us she needs to go. I make her go before we leave the house but I give her a choice of which bathroom to use. Giving her a choice avoids the whole "no no no" stuff. We went cold turkey on diapers and she only wears pulls up for bedtime.

  • @jesselayne8 - Did it take you the full 3 weeks for her to not have accidents with just underwear?

Blake has the same problems. He thinks and treats Pull Ups like his normal diapers and doesn't tell us when he needs to go. He tells us just after he does it. He even says "mommy I need a new diaper I peed or pooped." So I think he's ready.

No before that I just made her go after a certain amount of time. For the first week it was every 1 hr then I stretched it to 1.5hrs and then every 2hrs. Took her a good 9 days to not have an accident. She still doesn't always tell me when she has to poop (3 months into PTing) but I know her signs of when she is about to poop and I make her go to the potty then too.

  • I think we're in the same boat.  We are going on day 6 of PTing.  He has had about 5 accidents total which is awesome but we've basically been on lock down and have not left the house.

Since we've been in the house he's either naked or in his underwear and have gone to pull-ups (no more diapers) for nap and bedtime only.

Today is the first outing (birthday party at a park) so we will see how it goes.  I'm concerned about his car seat so we may go with pull-ups in the car and change into underwear once we get there. I'm also bringing his potty since I don't know the bathroom situation at the park.

As for telling us when he needs to go....he has done it a few times (or just gone to the potty himself) but it's usually me asking him if he needs to go.

Good luck! Keep us updated on how it's going.  This whole process has not been fun for us.

@KellyR33486‌ I put puppy pee pads in the car seat to protect it just in case. And of course bring a change of clothes.

Yes! My mom brought one over so we could do the same thing! Thankfully no accidents in the car.  He peed on the public potty once while we were there and had one pee pee accident.  Not terrible for the first outing.  I brought 3 changes of clothes just in case lol

Just get rid of the pull-ups for everything except night time. We never did pull-ups during the day. I just asked the girls a lot if they needed to go and made them try to go every time we left the house. Bring lots of extra clothes just in case. Honestly, he might surprise you. Both of my girls did much better when out and about than I expected.

we are in same boat with the pull ups. He just treats them as a regular diaper. He's been going consistantly when we put him on the potty though. I think we need to move him into phase 2 of the process where I set a timer or something where it goes off every 15 minutes to signal it is time to try or ask if they need to go. I have to ask my DC provider again how she does it. I figured I should try to take the approach she typically uses with the kids she watches. She has had success with it & I think being consistant between home & DC is probably best.  No underwear allowed at DC until a child is completely trained.  He has told me a couple times that "big boys no wear diapers." (Which I later learned he got from MH) So I think the desire is there, but he is a very cautious kiddo. He takes his own time to try new things, but he does eventually. He does well with the laid back approach to things. :)

  • Thanks for all of the tips. I would love to just get rid of all pull ups but daycare won't allow it do there is that :( we will continue to work hard at it at home while they work on it at daycare as well.
