WTF, Serger? (Help please!!!)

I'm not normally one to bless out household appliances, but I'm about ready to scream a stream of four letter words at my serger. I have rethreaded it four times, and it still refuses to cooperate. I cannot get the tension right on the upperlooper thread, and even with the most minute of adjustments to tension, it only takes about 5 minutes before the upperlooper thread starts to wrap around the spool post and eventually breaks. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! Any ideas??? Or know of any good serger forums? (I'm using a Brother 1034D if that helps.)

I don't know sergers, but that EXACT thing was happening on my sewing machine earlier. My bobbins weren't wound correctly so it was getting jammed under the plate

  • Sadly, sergers don't have bobbins, but thanks for the commiseration, Meesh! DS is up from his nap and DH is working late...on a day he's not supposed to work...and I'm grouchy...so I'm ignoring the serger and ordering pizza now. That should fix it, right?

  • My serger has been doing that too. I think it is a weak thread I am using, but it's new, so that might be wrong. It is so frustrating when it breaks and you have to the thread everything all over again.
  • What brand and type of thread are you using? Have you run the machine slowly with the door open to see exactly how it's all functioning?

Also can you take a picture of the problem? ETA Can you take a picture of each part of your machine so I can help check the threading?

  • You need to adjust the needle tension then work on the upper looper.

  • The thread is just regular Coats and Clark 100% polyester covered polyester. It is a new spool, so I don't think it's dry rotted. It only breaks when it's gotten bound up and wrapping around the spool post, but I don't know if it binds somewhere else first or not. I'll try rethreading it and taking pictures when DS goes to bed. I have a feeling there is something stupid simple that I am messing up, even though I have followed been following the (sucky) instruction manual.

  • Okay, I finally rethreaded it using a tutorial I found online, and it is working much better now. I think my upper and lower looper threads were getting tangled somehow.  I went to town on my little project and then I found out the hard way that sewing a heart shape with a serger is not a beginner level skill. <sigh>

    This made me LLOL.
