Too much sleep and dehydration for baby-pink tinged diaper (updated)

How long is too long to let baby sleep? LO went over 10 hours between feeds the last 2 nights. Awesome for me as I get to catch up on sleep, but when I changed her diaper this morning there was a pink tinge in it. I called the pedi and we are waiting a call back (we've been waiting 2.5 hours, they have a problem with their phones).

Dr Google tells me that maybe she was dehydrated as she went so long between feeds, and that they were uric acid crystals. Anyone else experienced this? I did go into see her twice during the night because she was smacking her lips but she wouldn't wake, and you always hear "never wake a sleeping baby". She did a massive pee this morning when we changed her diaper, so I think she is ok now. How long have you let your LOs go between feeds?

UPDATE: Nurse at pedis says we should be waking her every 3-4 hours for a feed at this age (10 weeks), however at 2 month check up dr said no need to wake in the night to feed anymore......WTH..... My husband spoke to the nurse (I was feeding LO), so I couldn't question it. Grrrrrr. I'm not going back to that again. I think I'll just have to try to wake her at 10pm to feed again, but waking her is hard as when she's asleep, she's asleep.

  • WHAT! I would let her sleep for sure. Christian sleeps an 8-9 hour stretch. I would see what happens--if the pink happens again, you could call the doctor again. Maybe just a freak thing.

  • Our Lo's sleep 8 hours...I'm not waking them!! Sorry you're dealing with this.

It happened to my son one night when he slept more than usual. It hasn't happened since and the dr didn't seem too worried about. I did freak out when I first saw it bc I thought it was blood. I think you should just keep an eye on it and talk to your dr about it if it keeps happening. It might just be a one time thing.
  • Happend to my son too when he was about 5 days old. He slept for a long time during the day and didn't have a wet diaper in probably 6 hrs and there was a spot of dark orange. Pedi said it was a sign of dehydration and since it only happend once he wasn't worried.

@bsouls‌ - exactly this. I went to see her twice in the night because she was smacking her lips but she was fast asleep so I didn't wake her. She was stirring at 7:30 so I went in to see her and fed her before she cried. Her diaper was heavy so she'd definitely peed plenty in the night.

I'm going to try to feed her at 10pm tonight if I can, that way she'll probably go 8 hours between feeds, if she wakes at 6...... I swear if I had been in the phone to the nurse I would have asked her if she was crazy!!!! They had a bad day with phones being down so it makes me thinks like she was just getting through calls as quick as possible.

  • As for the pink tinged thing - I don't know if it's a little late for this since your LO is a bit older but little girls can have a slight period because of mom's hormones. DD did that and I'm so glad we were warned since I would have freaked out. Just something to look into.
  • That nurse is ridiculous! She wants you to wake baby during the night and discourage learning to sleep through the night? No thanks bitch, hard pass!

I just want to mention that sleeping through the night is considered 6 hours. Now to what the nurse said I sorta agree here, I say sorta because it would be different with every baby. Your LO seemed to get dehydrated by the sounds of it and that would mean 10 hours is too long for her. If you can dream feed I'd do that, if not try to get her nursing more during the day.

If you are formula feeding make sure you are mixing the bottles right, to little water or too much power can cause issues. Test out the measurements on your bottles to make sure they are right some bottles can be off.

Yeh in my totally non-medical opinion, I agree with PP, I would wake her the next night as it's too long for your LO if they're dehydrated that day. It may just be a few nights you need to do that so they're back to right fluid levels, then give just leaving them sleep a go again. If the nappy is full and they seem happier, I would go back to letting them sleep :)

I woke her at 10 last night for a feed and then she woke at 6am, so we did 8 hours. No pink tinge, I'll see how that goes for a few days. I have to keep an eye on her as I'm trying to EBF but my supply is sketchy and I've just started taking Domperidone, so my only indication she's getting enough from me is wet diapers. She had a pretty heavy diaper again this morning and when she wakes she does a good 20 mins on each breast. Thanks for the replies ladies.
