Skin peeling on fingertips? Odd symptom?

For 2 weeks now, the skin on my fingertips has been peeling off (and gets to the point of cracking/bleeding). On a daily basis, I don't do a lot of dishwashing, hand washing or any "hard work" that would do a number on my hands, so I can't seem to figure out what's causing it.

I've tried every remedy I can think of...drinking extra water, using eucerin cream 3x a day (and even more at night), trying to not wash my hands as often. It will look like it's getting better, then the new skin peels right off.

I'm now 30 weeks today, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better or worse. Any other ladies having this odd symptom, or am I just being paranoid? (I'll also be asking my doc this week at my appointment)

Re: Skin peeling on fingertips? Odd symptom?

  • Have you spoken to your doctor about it? My brother used to have the skin peel off his fingers when he had strep throat. It was the only symptom he ever had.

  • I'm seeing my doctor on Tuesday, I'll be sure to ask him. I haven't been having any other symptoms or peeling in any other areas...it's just so odd!

I had this on my feet about 6 weeks ago (I'm 29 weeks+ right now). Everyone insisted athletes foot. My doctor said it was probably just from being on my feet so much. There was nothing wrong, it was just annoying.

I go through phases where the skin on my fingertips will peel. Even when I'm not pregnant. Not to the point of cracking and bleeding though. Have you tried wearing cotton gloves at night to really help the lotion soak into your skin?

  • I started that last night (dipped my hands into super thick prescription-grade lotion with gloves on). It helped a little, but just enough to keep them from cracking :/

It seems I can put lotion on hourly, but as soon as I do ANYTHING with my hands, they go back to "Sahara desert dry" and start to hurt. After some more research, some people said it could be signs of a vitamin deficiency, or an allergic reaction. I'll ask my doc to check my levels when I go in, and if all else fails, get a referral for a dermatologist.

It sounds like it could be eczema. Some women develop it or have it worsen during pregnancy. Your doctor should be able to tell you if that's it when they look at it.
  • Well I asked my OB today, and he said it can't be related to my pregnancy. He re-looked over all my vitals & vitamin levels, and ruled out any deficiencies or dehydration. He did say that dry/sensitive skin IS normal during pregnancy, and with my psoriasis background, i'm just seeing a more dramatic reaction from it.

Final diagnosis: nothing to be alarmed about, no true "fix" for it, it's just an annoyance I'll have to work through and should go back to normal once baby is born. Said I should be ok as long as I keep moisturizing to keep them from bleeding. Looks like i'm stuck with my lotion sock/gloves every night now for the next 2 months D:

  • hmm, i didn't even think about that. I haven't been using any different products, but it may be something outside of my house that's doing it. I've been sticking to Eucerin & a steroid cream to keep them from bleeding, that's it.

Thankfully, my fingers are finally starting to heal up...they are just still super sensitive :(
