Waffles

I'm really, really craving some Belgian waffles with whipped cream and strawberries. This is very sad b/c we do not have a waffle maker, whipped cream, or strawberries. :( But now I'm on Amazon trying to remedy one third of this problem. In our college cafeteria, we had one of those flip-over waffle makers that made gorgeous fluffy and crispy waffles, but sadly my kitchen is not quite so big. Do I really need one that flips? What is the purpose in the flippage? I'm looking at this one on Amazon, and it seems to have good reviews.

Re: Waffles

  • I think the flipping helps make it nice and fluffy. Ours does not flip, and unless the batter is just perfect, the waffles are kind of flat

  • I don't think you need one that flips to have fluffy waffles - fluffy waffles are from using a yeast batter (make it the night before) or separating the eggs and beating the whites into stiff peaks before folding them into the batter.

I've had this waffle maker for over 8 years and love it. We make waffles usually every other weekend, so it has seen heavy use.

  • We have one of the Belgian waffle makers that flips. I think you have to flip them because the Belgian version is so thick that the batter won't rise enough to fill the whole thing. (Traditional waffle irons that don't flip make thinner waffles.) I could be wrong, but that's my theory!

  • We had waffles with fruit for breakfast this morning :D

Our waffle maker doesn't flip, and it still does a decent job at making fluffy waffles, but it's German, so recommending it wouldn't be helpful.

  • We've got one that flips. Picked it up at Costco for a good price. Waring Pro I think it's the brand. It does a good job :-)

  • The waffle irons that flip tend to make the whole waffle nice and fluffy and golden brown where as the ones that don't tend to not be as fluffy or as nice and golden brown. Honestly I've grown up with a waffle iron that flips and then got a simple one, the simple one just was...blah they weren'tthe same.

I agree. We have had this same one for over 7 years and it's amazing. Just don't over mix your batter and make it from scratch with a recipe specifically for Belgian waffles.

  • Wow, I need some caffeine already. I've been looking at waffle recipes, and one called for AP flour. I'm all, "What is that? Super smart nerdy flour???"

Thanks for pointing out the bit about whipping the eggs. I've found a couple of different recipes and one with yeast that rests overnight which sounds like a winner since it's less to do in the AM, so I'll order something and see how it goes. Thanks, ladies!
