Triple Birth Weight by a Year?

edited May 2014 in May 2013 Moms
I've always heard the saying that LOs should triple their birth weight by one year. This was completely NOT true for AB. She was 9 lbs. 6 oz at birth, but only 23 lbs even at her one year checkup. To have tripled, she would have to have weighed 28 lbs + so she was under by 5 lbs! I was surprised that the pedi even quoted that saying, and seemed somewhat concerned about her weight. So, did this saying hold true for you?

  • My first didn't triple until 18 months and DS is looking like he is on the same track. Both were 7lb and some change at birth and 19lb at 1yr.

My oldest started out my smallest but tripled his weight way before 12 months. My middle guy was over 9 lbs but also tripled by a year.

My little A would have tripled if she had kept gaining like she did at first. I am not sure how much she will be below. She fell way off her growth curve.

I voted ss because LO isn't a year old yet. I feel like she's going to be just about triple her birth weight at that point though.

    E was 9lbs 1oz and I haven't weighed her recently but there's no way she's 27lbs+

I'd guess she's more like 20-22lbs. She has like 5 chins and her leg rolls are fighting one another so I'm not worried.

LO was 6 lbs 14 oz at birth and 19 lbs 8 oz at a sick visit last month.  She doesn't turn 1 until next wk but I'm guessing she will be close to tripling her birth weight.  I had not heard about this "rule" either until today.  It seems to make more sense for the babies that started out smaller.  It's hard to imagine some of the babies who started out bigger getting to 27 or 28 lbs!

  • I voted special snowflake. V and E weren't preemies but they were small, just under 6 lbs each, and at one year are 20 and 21.5 pounds. So they more than tripled their birth weight but they were really small at birth.

R was 8lbs 1 oz at birth and I'm assuming he's around the 24-25lb mark now. His appointment isn't until the 30th. So it looks like he'll be right around there. He's so active and so tall that I feel its going to be a struggle putting weight on him in the future.

I'm a special snowflake but can't resist the urge to brag - M QUINTUPLED his birth weight.  We have worked very, very, very hard to make that happen and I'm stupidly proud.

Andplusalso this is the first time I ever heard the tripling rule.  Interesting.

I feel like your doctor is then implying that a heavier baby, such as this 28+ pounder I have, isn't active. I think a majority of babies/ toddlers this age are really active, regardless of their weight.

I wouldn't take offense to it (it seems like you are - but I may be wrong) or read too much into it. DS gained less than one lb in three months (12 oz to be exact). I think he was just telling me there is no reason to be concerned. There can be many contributing factors (metabolism, activity level, genetics, the fact that DS was EBF which usually has lower weight gain, etc). The only thing that matters is if a baby is healthy - at 18 lbs or 28 lbs.

Our appointment is Thursday and I think she's going to be really close.  She was 6 pounds 10 oz at birth, so she would need to be 19 pounds 14 ounces.  When I jumped on the scale with and without her tonight, I got 20 pounds, but that's not as accurate as the doctor's office.

  • damn, i didn't know SS was special snowflake. we're off by about a pound and a half so I said we were kind of on track? I'm pretty sure we're the tiniest baby of the entire board at only 16 lb, 6 oz at her 1 year appt.

I think though as long as they're on their own curve it's fine either way.

  • My LO was 8lbs 15oz at birth and was 23lbs at his one year appt. so he was 4 pounds under tripling his weight. The dr didn't even mention that rule and said he is growing well.
  • Omg just did the math.....so she would have to be 24 lbs?!? No fucking way! We didn't even break 20! Oops guess I have a mini model on my hands.
