Possible fetal arrhythmia

Anyone else have any experience with this? My midwife thinks she heard an irregularity in baby's heartbeat yesterday. So she booked me in for an ultrasound to double check (that happens Tuesday). If they confirm the arrhythmia, I don't know what to expect next.
I know that it's probably nothing to panic about and that these things tend to correct themselves before birth... But any stories of similar experiences would ease my mind!

Re: Possible fetal arrhythmia

  • At my last appointment 4 weeks ago, the nurse picked up a little arrhythmia.  I don't think that's what she called it though.  I don't know if this is the same, but in my case my doctor explained that the main flap to the heart (sorry, have no scientific names!) is still developing and can catch, or stay open for a beat before flapping back down.  When we listened to the heartbeat you could hear a "thud" every fourth beat, which was the flap "catching".  She said this is completely normal and it can come and go as the heart develops.  She said it should resolve by birth.  She said they'd just listen at every checkup and if it doesn't seem to resolve they would do an echochardiogram.  At my appointment yesterday, the arrhythmia was gone.  She said it could come and go still, but most likely it has cleared up.  Again, I don't know if this is similar to your situation.  But just thought I'd share my experience!  Hope it all clears up for you and that everything is just fine!

Thank you. That's likely the same thing that's happening with me. I'm glad it cleared up for your baby and I hope everything goes smoothly for you from now on.
  • My son (first child) was born with a heart defect, so we were listening closely to my daughter, (second child) in utero.  We detected what they called PACs, or Premature Atrial Contractions.  For us it just meant monthly ultrasounds to monitor and a planned exam in the NICU triage at delivery for her to get cleared.  She did end up having a few tiny ventricular holes, and the PACs continued for a short time after her birth, but everything turned out just fine.

  • Arrhythmias are super normal. I've supervised adult monitor screens for hours on end and am happy to say we are all abnormal at sometime or another (unless paced). I don't, however, have experience with infant or in utero monitoring. Hope everything turns out well! I'm sure it will.
