Selling our house while 4 months preg with twins...what to do next?

Hi mamas!

I'm a FTM and am expecting twins in October.  We put our house on the market just before finding out we were pregnant, and have been on the fence ever since on whether or not we want to follow through on selling it.  The house we live in is pretty small, and we have wanted to upsize for a couple years.  We said we'd stay there with one baby, but when baby #2 came along, we'd definitely need to upgrade.

We just got a reasonable offer on the house, and now I'm feeling very anxious.  Has anyone moved while pregnant?  It sounds like a ton of work and stress for a pregnant lady!  Also, we don't know whether we will rent or buy after we sell this house.  Money is tight with our mortgage payment already, and I am concerned that if we buy a new house with a similar mortgage, we'll be really financially strapped.  Our other option is to rent a house, and pay a $300 or $400 less per month versus a mortgage.

How expensive are babies?  I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I really don't know how much I need to budget for their care.  I'm pretty thrifty, and am going to try to breastfeed, cloth diaper, and make my own baby food.  Anyone have advice on what to do after our house sells?

First off congrats. Secondly pray! But seriously. The cost of a baby varies on many factors. Insurance and health care Child care costs Do you plan to breastfeed or are you going to using formula Disposable diapers or cloth Start by figuring out some of these and that my help. Congrats on getting an offer on your house!

eta:  Sorry I was mobile bumpin and see that you do have some of that figured out.

In the long run, mortgages are way better than paying rent.  You build up equity instead of losing your money forever.

Have you looked out moving to an area where you will get more bang for your buck?  Sometimes changes the neighborhood will save you tons of money.

  • We're moving in June... I was stressed about it but I've gotten over it. I can't carry stuff... It is what it is.

I totally understand your mortgage hesitation. I'd get some rates and see what you could buy... It's so hard to predict how much is too much. I'm apprehensive about our new one but we need the space.

  • I don't have any actual advice because I am in the same boat as you but I am looking forward to the move so I think that is taking the stress off. We sold our house in 5 days last month and have to be out next week. We just bought our new house in a different state last week and won't move in until the middle of June. In between houses, I am going to stay with family while DH stays in a hotel in our current city to keep working until our final move in June. We did hire movers for next week that will also store our stuff, drive it all up in June, and move it in to the new place. I love the idea from @crawford411 about hiring a cleaning person to go into the new place first!

Anyway, before I get more wordy with no actual advice since I haven't actually moved yet, I will say that I am so glad we owned and will continue to. The equity in our current home has allowed us to seriously upgrade in our next home and with our next home, even if the market doesn't move and we sell it for what we paid for it, I am sure we will get all our money back. I look at it like living for free, even if it doesn't seem free while your making your payments (unless the housing market crashes again which shouldn't be a problem now because the market is still sort of down or steady right now). You will never get your rent payments back. Good luck on whatever you decide!

  • We moved when I was 7 months pregnant with ds. We hired movers to move the big stuff and I wish we would have had them do it all! We moved into a rental for 4 months while looking for our house. I wish we would have had cleaners come in before we moved in. It looked clean until we were in the house.

I planned on breast feeding and that did not work at all. I have also known people who were determined to cloth diaper and their baby's skin had reactions to the diapers. Always budget for worst case scenario. Formula for two will run you at least $60 a week if you can get it at a Costco like store. I would estimate around $30 a week in diapers when they are newborns. You can sign up on baby product sites and they will send you samples and coupons. Sign up everybody you know (including pets) for formula sites all with your address. They will send you checks that you can use when you buy they're formula.
  • We are moving this weekend! We've been packing over the last 2 months, and we moved some stuff today and have movers coming tomorrow for boxes and furniture. It's been a little stressful but it will be worth it. It's a bigger house in a great kid friendly neighborhood. I'm not looking forward to the unpacking, but I do look forward to getting settled and starting the nursery. Good luck!!
