DS not emptying bladder/erections/UTIs

Hi everyone,

My 30 month old son has been potty trained since he was 26 months old.  He has his first UTI and the doctor said that for boys, it's usually an issue of not emptying their bladder rather than a hygiene problem.

DS often gets erections mid-stream and I think this is why he doesn't empty his bladder.  He refuses to stay on the potty long enough to let his erection "settle down" and try again, and also refuses to go back on the potty after he has peed (even though I know he likely still has pee in his bladder).

Any tips to deal with this? I would hate for him to get another UTI.

  • Does he know how to stand up & pee yet? I saw an idea before but never had to use it for DS (3-1/2). You put a Cheerio in the potty and have him aim for the Cheerio. This was to help them learn to aim in the potty but it might help your DS if there's a fun incentive to try. Good luck.

When DD wasn't emptying her bladder the urologist had us use one of the "hats" that sit on the toilet. We had lines and encouraged DD to fill up the hat, making it a game or a challenge to see how much pee she could get in the hat. Gross, yes- but it got her to sit long enough to empty her bladder instead of just going enough to relieve the pressure.

  • Two great ideas, thanks!

  • I've tried giving him toys and books to distract him, but he gets too distracted and doesn't pee at all :(
