Twins with different sac sizes?

Maybe this is my IF brain on overdrive, but at my 6w5d u/s, we found out we were having twins. This was almost two weeks ago. As our second ultrasound sneaks up very slowly (this coming Monday) I am really overanalyzing our u/s pic. In it, one baby's sac size is MUCH bigger than the other. I don't know how to attach a pic, but a link to my blog is in my siggy and I posted the u/s on my May 5th post if you wanna have a look.

Of course, I can't just relax and think everything will be okay after all we've gone through. My H mentioned it to the RE and he said it was just the angle. The babies are measuring within two days of each other and both had heartbeats in the 120's. I know that if my RE said there isn't anything to worry about, I shouldn't worry. But, I just can't help it.

My question is have any of you had something similar? Babies measuring normal but sac sizes were drastically different? Like an idiot, I goog.led it. Bad idea. I'm not counting this as an intro until after our ultrasound on Monday!

Re: Twins with different sac sizes?

  • McIrish posted something similar on PAIF a few weeks ago. I shared one of my u/s pics where the sacs look like different sizes, but it was the angle. I know it's hard not to worry, but I'm sure everything is fine. :) Here is the link: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12329346/not-sure-about-today-s-ultrasound#latest

  • An u/s pic is just a cross-section. There's a whole lot of baby and sac that you don't see. Perhaps one sac was cut across lengthwise and the other width wise, making them look totally different. They don't necessarily lie the same way. If you're not on mobile my u/s is in my siggy and one baby looks way bigger than the other, but the pic cuts across them at different parts of them. If that makes sense. I'm sure there's nothing to be concerned about.

Hi, welcome, and congrats on your pregnancy! I took a peek at your u/s picture and see what you're talking about with the size differences. Keep in mind what your RE said about the angles, especially since both were measuring on track and had strong heartbeats. Those u/s pictures are just a cross section so it's entirely possible that the sacs are not as different in size. It's also fairly common to have babies measure days apart especially with di-di twins...mine were mo-di and consistently measured days apart. It's a hard waiting game...fingers crossed and best wishes for good news on Monday.

  • I had the same issue.  Twin B's sac was much smaller than A's.  They just kept an eye on it, and by my anatomy scan, it was evened out.  I have 2 healthy almost 2 year olds now!  The most important thing right now is the growth of the babies inside of the sacs.  Good luck!

  • Chiming in a little late but try not to worry. No one but the local RE seemed to care that one sac was smaller (the baby was measuring on time). I had an abdominal u/s last Fri at the OB's at 10w2ds and they said everything was fine. Apparently issues arise if the HB was slow or the sac is "weeks" behind the baby-a few days/week is ok. Hang in there Beachy!

No new advice, I agree with the PPs but wanted to add some more congrats and fingers crossed for a great appt Monday.
  • Here is my u/s I have a ton more because b's sac was about a month behind (even though they implanted the same time) it was terrifying but all is well and now he's my fattest twin.

Didn't matter what angle they looked the sac was extremely small but after week 15 all was ok. Hope that helps some!

ETA: mine were spontaneous I wasn't seeing an RE but hopefully seeing another u/s might help :)

    Congrats!!

  • Here was my first ultrasound at eight weeks. I was concerned about the size difference as well. OB said it was just the angle. My boys are now eight months old.

  • @beachy6 I'm glad you had a good appointment and are feeling better! It's totally an angle thing. Watch when the RE/OB moves around the wand and you'll see the sacs change shape and size like crazy. Don't worry if next ultrasound they look different again, it's normal :)

I just read your blog and the story of how you told Ayden was so sweet! Very happy for you girl!

Also... I was buying maternity clothes at 8 weeks too haha. Twins are no joke man!
