Ok, but really, how long?

I hear the "don't wake a sleeping baby" and the "sleep begets sleep" argument. But there has to be a line. You wouldn't let a baby sleep 24 hours. So where is the line? How long would you really let a baby sleep during the day?
If your baby fell asleep at 430 pm and was still sleeping when you went to bed at like 9, would you not feed them? Would they then wake for the day at like 4am? I know this has been discussed to death but I just don't want to miss something being wrong and don't want LO to get night and day screwed up when she's doing well now.

Re: Ok, but really, how long?

  • I always start the first bottle of the day at around the same time (between 7:00 to 7:30). I then feed him every 3 to 3 1/2 hours the rest of the day until bedtime. If he is asleep and it's been 3 1/2 hours since his last bottle, I wake him to eat. The idea is to get almost all of their daily ounces in during the day and they should only have to wake for a little bit during the night. This theory worked beautifully for my DD (now 4 years old) and is working like a charm again with DD (2 months old next week).

  • I usually start lo's bedtime routine at 7 for bedtime at 8. He napped through it yesterday and today. Should I just do his bedtime routine when he wakes up? He's already been sleeping for 2.5 hours (fell asleep a little before 6, it's 8:20 now). I just don't want to be up all night with him!

I don't know the answer to this really. It's part of my question, haha.

Thanks everyone who responded. I feel better I'm not the only one who will wake during the day. I usually let her go 3-3.5 hours during the day. I may just try letting her go a little longer each day until it affects her nighttime sleep.

  • I always wake LO for his night time routine. After we get home from daycare, he is so pooped that he will nap, but I wake him anyway. He has bath at 7pm and then sometimes he falls right back asleep. Other times he will nurse for a bit. Bath time is the only thing I schedule for him. Sometimes he will stay awake, and sometimes he will nap after bath, but then its nurse or bottle and then to bed.

You don't need to have a schedule, but at least a routine, and I make our bath start his night time routine. He knows that means we are getting ready for his long sleep.

He sleeps from 9pm-5pm and has been doing this since about 1 month.

  • I don't wake at night, however if she isn't awake by 6 or 7 am I will dream feed, even with pumping I'm engorged.

During the day I don't let her go past three hours for nursing. She rarely naps for 2- 1/2 hours and wakes her self for food. However starting around 6, I nurse every two hours to try and "tank her up". This was recommended by 2 docs. She usually is down for her stretch by 10:30 or eleven.

  • My LO eats around 8-9 pm and then goes to sleep.  We feed her a bottle before we go to bed, around 11:30 pm.  Sometimes she wakes up for it, sometimes she eats it in her sleep.  After that we let her sleep as long as she wants (anywhere from 4-8 hrs).  When she gets up in the morning she gets a wake up bottle, and then eats every 2-3 hours after that.  Her daytime naps are not usually that long, anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, so I haven't had to worry about her missing a feeding, but if she did, I would wake her up around the 3 hour mark to feed her and keep her on a routine.
