Question about WCM

Sorry if this is repetitive but I'm in a bind. At A's 9 month check up I had asked about WCM and she had said to wait till a year old and I agreed. However she did say that if i ran out of formula during the week of her birthday just give her milk. She turned 1 yesterday and I ran out of formula today. I'm not sure if there is a point to buy formula or just do milk.

I make formula by the pitchers so I had some that lasted the whole day and I mixed her bottles half formula / half milk. Tomorrow will be just milk but I am nervous. I'm not sure how much to give her. Her pedi appointment is tomorrow thank God but for her morning bottle I am at a loss. She usually gets 7oz of formula in the morning.

Has anyone started whole milk yet? How much are you giving?

Pedi told us 15-17 oz a day of WCM.

We are transitioning right now. We have a half of tub left, so doing half and half. We went to our appt on Tuesday so i asked what happened after we were out. She said to stick around 16 oz of WCM and try and phase out bottles before his 15 month appt.

^are you sure he will? We warm the milk in his bottle and he seems to love it.

  • Dang, I gotta up her milk intake. She still nurses, but I am pretty sure there are drops just coming out now. I give her whole milk yogurt, an a few ounces of milk, but not close to 14 to 16oz. I would be surprised if she could drink all that too.

@oohgurl thanks for the checklist!! I hope she does well with just milk in the morning. I'm not sure if giving her a 7oz bottle of it will be ok but we shall see. We should get an owner's manual with every stage of life. Infant, toddler , school age etc. lol.

  • Our dr said not to sorry about formula oz vs milk oz. He had been doing 7 oz bottles 4x a day but slowly decreased as he are more. It took a bit of trial and error but we are at 4 bottles of WCM now, 5-6 oz each. Our pedi said up to 24 oz was ok and it would naturally balance out with his food intake. So long as milk isn't replacing food intake, the pedi said he was good.

  • LO nurses in the early morning and at night before bed, but my supply is way down so I estimate he only gets about 3 oz each time.

Then he gets two bottles during the day of 50/50 BM and WCM (12 oz total of the mix), and I give him a sippy of WCM at meal times, so he gets maybe 2 oz each meal.

    That would breakdown to daily

    BM - 12 oz
    WCM - 12 oz

C has been drinking the same for a couple of weeks now. He won't be one for another week.

We also started before one. We got the green light to start WCM at 10 1/2 months, and we started to transition then, then LO got sick and wasn't eating much so we switched back to formula for a bit. Now, we're all WCM. I also asked the doctor about water versus milk, and if there was any reason to give him water; he said there really wasn't a need to, unless he was drinking more than 24 oz of milk a day. He's been doing 4 bottles of WCM and usually a sippy of water with lunch

  • We have been making the switch since she turned 11 months, slowly.  She is on all milk, now. She will be one next week. She probably drinks 10-12 oz of milk per day, plus water. My ped said not to worry as much about every ounce, just make sure she is drinking milk and water regularly, but not to let her drink too much milk, either, it shouldn't replace food.  She has a sippy of milk with breakfast, water until lunch, milk with lunch, water for the pm, milk with dinner, and one 6 oz bottle of milk before bed.  She wanted her mostly off bottles by 12 months, but said that the night bottle could go on a little longer. I am happy to have gotten away from the bottles!

I just did it this week (switched over). I did it like this: day 1, he got his morning bottle at 7am with formula, 8 oz. Then with lunch, instead of giving him his normal 6 oz of formula, I gave him 6 oz of wcm in a sippy (he only drank 3 oz but I was thrilled that he liked it).
Day 2: same as day 1, and replaced his "dinner" bottle with a sippy with 6 oz of wcm (he only drank 1 oz). (All meals include food as well just to be clear)
Day 3: same as days 1 and 2, but his evening bottle (kept the bottle for this one) was 8 oz wcm, he drank it all.
Day 4: (today) first bottle of the day (also kept it in bottle) was 8 oz wcm (of course he drank it all - these kids love their bottles!)
Today is the first whole day on wcm. My guy isn't a pro with a sippy cup yet so I'm keeping the first bottle and last bottle of the day in actual bottles so I can make sure he gets at least 16 oz of wcm.

Thank you ladies for all the responses!! I was MIA all weekend because we had A's birthday party and I was running around like a looney bin!

We had her appointment on friday and she basically told me to not even look back at formula and continue with the WCM. She said that A can have from 17-26 oz of milk but not to go above that.

We're doing it in bottles and sippys as of now because I felt bad stopping the bottles right away. The pedi wants her off by 15 months so hopefully it happens.

We started mixing B's formula with WCM at 11.5 months.  He loves it! Every other day, I replace an ounce of formula with an ounce of milk.  (At this point, his sippy cups are half formula, half WCM.)  Since I am almost out of formula, he'll be completely on WCM soon. :-)
