Jogging strollers

First off, hi. I am a semi-luker who has been slowly emerging from lurkerdorm since that post a month or so ago that pulled many of us out of hiding. Brief background, I am a FTM from New England and my little guy was born 2/8/14.

I haven't run since shortly after my BFP (was too nervous after being put on pelvic rest until 12 weeks). Anyway, it was a big part of my life and I'm hoping to get back to it soon. A few friends mentioned that it is not safe to use a jogging stroller until after the baby is 4 months. The manual on my BOB, however, said 8 months. This seems like a big discrepancy, so I was just curious what others have been told. I plan on asking my pediatrician when we go for LO's 4 month appointment in June (and obviously won't be bringing him on any runs before then, anyway).

Our lo's are birthday twins :-)

I run with my kids in a double bob, Lo in the car seat attachment. DS1 was going for runs with me using the car seat attachment starting at 6 weeks. IMO do what you are comfortable with- I only run on smooth pavement or sidewalks and quite frankly am not running much faster than a brisk walk! I can see Lo since he is facing me and he is not jostling around in the seat and is strapped in tight so I feel ok about it. I would not run with him in just the seat at this point- I have put him in for quick walks and he is pretty small for the seat and doesn't look comfortable. I'll probably wait until he is 8 months for that.

I was really funny about waiting with my first baby until 6 months, since that's what I had read. Our pediatrician said to use our judgment about head control and whether she seemed to be bouncing around.  With this baby, I figured that I'm really not going very fast on smooth roads, and he is in the carseat, probably less bouncy than in the car.  So I have been jogging with him in both the single and double BOB for awhile.  We started sometime after the 2-month mark.
BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

@bribbon‌ I thought it was just running that wasn't recommend in the seat until 8 months- I don't think walking (even briskly) with it is unsafe, my Lo just is a little floppy in the big seat.

  • @ziggy903 - thanks! l'd like to think lurking gave me a fairly decent education of good post vs. not-so-good post.

@bribbon - I wouldn't panic. It sounds like what you are doing is just fine. I wouldn't have had any idea of any limitations until my friends mentioned it-- never would have crossed my mind!
  • Thanks for posting this. It didn't even cross my mind that it wouldn't be ok. I started trying to jog last week. I'm still only doing short intervals & it's on flat paved sidewalk for the most part. I'll be emailing my pedi tonight. Thanks again
