Baby Names

Honesty appreciated!

Hi all! I'm usually a very decisive person, but this baby has thrown us for a loop.

We are still awaiting our A/S to find out the sex. We have a boy name (Cal William, after our grandfathers). But we are at a loss for girls name as DD is our two favorite girls names (Grace Charlotte - Charlotte is my great grandmother's name).

We like to use family names for middle names and will definitely will use Rose as a middle name, after DH's great grandmother. However, we have a bit of an issue. Our favorite girl name at the moment is…. Violet. As in, Violet Rose.

Is this as terrible as I am making it? Or is it ok? She will only go by Violet, as Rose is just the middle name, but I am concerned that altogether it's too ridiculous.

I'm hoping you all approve, but if you can't stand it, feel free to suggest other first names that would go well with Rose (we love vintage, classic that are not too overused). TIA!

  • As long as your last name isn't a flower, too!  :)

  • I think it's a really beautiful name and the two flowers thing is NBD

  • I actually really like it. When I hear Violet I don't automatically think the flower or colour. I just think "What an awesome name!" I say if you both love the name, use it

  • I love both Violet and Rose but not when they're used together. Its just a little too much.

  • I dislike both together. Two flower names is a no go. To me, fn are more important, so if you really love Violet, switch out the mn. You can always use an R name to honor your relative or save Rose for the next dd (should you be so blessed).
If you really want Rose as mn, how about Viola Rose?
  • 2 flower names + 2 color names = a no go for my taste.

But, truly, it's not that bad.

  • What about Violet Rosa?  Or Viola Rose?

IMO it's a little gimmicky sounding, but not horrible.  I hava a girlfriend whose DD is Lily Rose.

  • Thanks ladies! Knew I could count on this board for an honest take! I think, while I agree with most of your that it isn't the WORST combo I've heard, I tend to lean towards the "I like those names, but not together" mantra.

Back to the drawing board… I'd love ideas!

FWIW the other names we are considering are
Emma Rose (my favorite, but so popular I'm doubting it at the moment and DH thinks it sounds too much like Emily Rose, like the horror movie)
    Cecily Rose
    Violet Jean or Violet Jane

I adore both Violet and Rose, but not together. Maybe use one for this child and save the other for the next girl you have.

I would veto Violet Rose personally. It's too much. I can forgive a double noun but not two flowers *and* two colors. I like both names though.
This. I love Lily but can't use it for the same double-flower reason (Lily Rose).
  • I personally wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't judge anyone who did.

Hi @PennyLane26!!  Violet was on my list too, but MH vetoed.  But the very top of my list was Cecily (also vetoed.)  I will <3 you forever if you go with Cecily Rose!  I think it sounds good with your other daughter's name, and it has a vintage classic feel without being common.
