Partial Custody Potty Training

edited May 2014 in Potty Training
Basically i have my almost three year old (october 15!!) from thursday to sunday and my mom has her the rest of the time. my mom says if i would try she would be 100% potty trained right now but shes my first kid and I have no idea how to potty train a toddler. whenever i change her pull up i have her sit on her potty for like 15 minutes and nothing. If shes basically potty trained at my moms then she should be able to tell me when she has to potty. the only time she says anything is when she JUST pooped. Any tips? Any opinions about the 24 hour potty training method?

Have you asked your mother what she does at her house?  I'm guessing when you go to change her pullup and put her on the potty she doesn't have to go, which is why she doesn't go (and honestly as an adult, I couldn't imagine sitting on the toilet for 15 mins!  I'm sure its pretty frustrating to do that for your 2 1/2 year old!).  Why not just put her in underwear and remind her when she has to go to use the potty.  You may have a few accidents but if she's already doing it at your moms there's no reason she won't catch on fast.

  • I second putting her in underwear. When she has an accident just tell her she is all wet and you need to get dry now. It might happen a couple of times before she understands that it won't be contained like a pull up. The most I would have a kid sit on a toilet is about 1-5 minutes. But really if they are really against I would not push for sitting. Does she have her own potty chair? You can put that in new different exciting places just to get her used to using it. Have her play with her dolls like they are going on the potty. Make it happy and exciting and don't stress about accidents. It's just pee it'll clean up.

Why put her on the potty AFTER you change her pull-up? If she just went in her pull-up, of course she won't go in the potty. Can you potty twice in a row?

    Go for the underwear.
If you want to put her on the potty, do it at intervals and/or times she is more likely to go - right after a nap, before or after a meal, etc.
Don't force the potty or make her stay for extended periods. If it's been awhile since her last potty and she hasn't asked to go or told you she needs to go, have her "practice" for a minute or two. Tell her it's fine if she doesn't go, no pressure, just going to practice just in case.
    When she goes, celebrate.
  • you should try carwyn turbo potty training!!
  • With my son I put him on the potty at times I know he will have to go. Right after he wakes up, about 30 min after a meal things like that. He still has accidents but he gets really proud of himself when he is able to go at the times I put him on the potty.
I have a partial custody situation with my daughter and my mom as well (long story). When she was potty training my mom and I made 100% sure that we were on the same page. It was much easier for my DD to have 1 set of rules instead of 2.
Take her to pick out her own panties. And praise her every time she goes.
