Opinions on the name Emery

DH and I have had a boy's name locked in the entire pregnancy, but we've been struggling with a girl's name (we're team green). My MIL's maiden name is Emery so we're throwing that around for a girl's name. I'm not 100% convinced and I think we would need a super feminine middle name, and we can't come up with anything that flows well with Emery. Do you ladies have any opinions? Either on the name itself or a middle name that makes it more feminine??

Re: Opinions on the name Emery

  • It sounds nice for a girl's name, and I think it is feminine already, but I also think Emery board almost immediately.

  • We have been throwing Claire around for a first name as well so I like Emery Claire a lot. I also agree with @PeopleKnowMe that it would work for a middle name, but DH's family is so used to hearing it as a last name that I think it may sound silly for us as a middle name.
  • My friend's daughter is Emery, I think it's cute for a girl. I also vote with the one syllable middle names like Grace, Rose, etc.

I also immediately thought of Emery board, but I also really like the name and the sentiment behind it.  A few people said Emery Rose and for some reason that was the first thing I thought of!

Of the 500+ students at my school -- only one Emery and it's a girl.  That's enough to get my vote.  :)  Love the name.

  • We are actually using this name as a middle name for LO, it's my boyfriends fathers middle name and he wanted to incorporate his fathers name somehow ... I love it as a first name for a little girl as well I say go for it! We have our as on Friday after we know LO gender well start trying first names with it
  • I love the name. I also love the family connection. Like others said, a shorter middle name would nice. I was thinking Emery Jane :) The middle names others suggested are nice too!

Emery Jane popped into my head as well. Honestly, I've never heard Emery as a boys name. But maybe I've been living under a rock. I like it for a girl better.

Honestly, not a fan of boy names on girls. I'd use it in the middle name spot.

In 2013 it ranked #174 for girls and #741 for boys.

That doesn't mean it's historically a girl's name, just that it's rising in popularity as a girl's name....

I like it, not necessarily my style, but it's cute. I know a little girl with it. Another variation is Emerson?

    I like Emery Rose.

  • All Emerys I know are male.  One is late 70's, one is 32 and one is 4.

Personally I hate the name emery, it's NMS at all! That being said all emerys that I know are male, so I feel I have am extra dislike for it on a baby girl. But this is your little human, name him/her whatever you want!

  • My family is big on using maiden names for middle names, most of the maiden names in our family really can't be used as first names. I like Emery as a first name or a middle name and it has a personal meaning behind it so it makes it even more special.

  • One of my girlfriends just had her baby girl about 5 months ago, she named her Emery Jean.  I had never heard of the name, and while its not a name I ever would have thought of, it has grown on me immensely!  Also, I love incorporating family names so its a win win for me.

I like it, and I love that it has a family connection. I like pp.'s suggestion for Rose as the middle name.

I'm not a fan of it as a girls name at all. Too masculine, but if you like it because of the family connection then go for it. Maybe as a middle name instead?

  • I only know one Emery and she's a girl. I looked into it and when Emery was at it's peak for boys, Emory was at it's peak for girls, so I don't think it's too masculine at all.

I like Emery for a girl's name! The first thing that popped in my head was Emery Jane. I think someone else suggested that too. I love that it has a family connection :)
  • Emery is my niece's name so I am partial to it. I think it is a nice alternative from the too popular Emily/Emma, etc. Her middle name is Faye which is a family name. I agree that a short middle name flows best.

  • I'm scratching my head over Emery even being a boys name... It just seems odd to me. Anyway, I like it as a girls name and am with most posters on the one syllable middle name. :)
