S/O solids

So my Dr said when I start solids not to do rice cereal because of the arsenic in it.  She said that it is not safe for babies.  Anyone else's Dr. say this to them?

My dr did not say that, but I have read about trace levels of arsenic in rice. Did he recommend oatmeal instead?
yes.  She said that there is not enough research done so to avoid it.

  • I bought both rice cereal and oatmeal but LO hates them both.  He will only eat fruit or veggies right now.

  •  Yep, my doctor said the same thing.

  • Nope. He said we could start with cereal but he really wants her on healthy fats for brain growth. He said to do avocado, fish, beans, eggs, and pb if possible. No fruits until 6 months.

Our pedi recommended starting rice or oatmeal at his 4 month, we're doing BLW and I think we've still got a bit but we won't be considering giving him rice at any point due to the arsenic in rice. I have considered using barley and quinoa (cooked whole or in pancakes, not flaked as in cereal) as he gets old enough.

  • I hadn't planned to start solids until 6 months but she was giving all the signals at 4.5, including taking 13 ozs AND nursing twice between 8p-4a...I had no intention of doing rice so we did some oatmeal but didn't really go well. Waited another week, started avocado on Monday night. She LOVES it and has torn up on what I've sent to daycare and given for dinner. We'll revisit oatmeal and quinoa (we pretty much only use quinoa at home) but still no rice.

@LinnyF‌ Is this a special situation for your child specifically? Eggs and PB are usually not started until at least a year for allergy precautions. And, I'm surprised he wants you to start meat (fish) before fruits. I'm not saying your lying about what he told you, but wondering if that is his general start with everyone or if your LO has a special need for the fatty stuff.

My lactation consultant and ped both said to skip all cereals since they're unnecessary and go straight to fruit/veggie/meat at six months. I'm not sure if that advice would be the same to a formula fed baby though.

Don't remember where I saw it, but it seems that the trends is moving towards doing these typical allergy-related foods (eggs and pb) earlier instead of waiting. I've also heard to start with meat - like liver.

Still makes me nervous. Might try some hard boiled egg though.

We talked him down from scotch and cigars. ;)

Seriously though, that is what he said. No special situation. We have no family history of allergies and it seems the recommendation is moving away from waiting until a year. We are still moving carefully, one food at a time for a week before introducing another. We have only done avocado so far and she isn't a fan.

My H and I are very happy with our pedi and agree with his recommendations. She will basically be eating all the things I did in the last tri. My go to dinner was salmon, quinoa, and avocado. Lol

The reason cereals are often recommended is because they are fortified with iron. Baby's iron stores from birth gradually deplete and between 6-12 months they need an additional source of iron.

This, they are pushing meat and other iron rich foods here for that reason.

Lol. No scotch, but some whiskey in the guns can't hurt. ;)

I really wasn't questioning your judgement, just wondering. I hope I didn't sound judgey!

  • My dr recommend baby rice cereal for the iron. We started with avacdo then the rice cereal a few days later
  • The only thing my doctor says is start with veggies vs. fruit.
  • So not trying to thread jack... But do you have to start with some kind of cereal? We are waiting till 6 months to start any solids since we are just getting the milk issue under control, so can I just go right to fruits/veggies/BLW?
We just feed him whatever we have or are eating as long as it's not a potential allergen (like peanuts) or something that is really salty. BLW by the book. Literally by the book, I have the book. :-)

Hmmm seems like I should reconsider rice cereal after reading this thread.
  • My ped gave me samples of rice cereal and told me
    To start with that!! Now
    I'm questioning her!!
  • I have done SO much research on this topic. My daughter is 4.5 months, and has been showing all the signs of wanting our food! Our doc told us to start cereal a week before she was 4 months. That didn't happen. None of that mess going near my child! So instead, i felt the best option for her to start on would be egg yolk from a hard boiled egg. (Allergies from eggs come from the egg white, not the yolk.)We started this a couple days ago. The eggs should be from free range hens, and organic of course. We just hard boiled it, removed all but the yolk, I mushed it up, added a tiny bit of her formula and sprinkled the tiniest amount of sea salt on it. DD seemed it enjoy it! She took the spoon from my husband and started feeding herself! I think we will introduce avacado next week. Happy feeding yall!

This. 12yo DS1's allergist said they are no longer avoiding these types of food for babies like they did years ago. They are to be introduced early. She even recommended early intro for DS2 even though DS1 has peanut allergy/had a milk allergy. I'm still skeptical and holding off solids for a bit. It was a struggle for years with DS1 till things got figured out and I'm not looking forward to a repeat.
I was at a recent academic conference and many of the podium presentations were regarding the prevalence of food allergies in the US vs. other countries. One of the theories is that the previous guidance to delay specific types of foods is actually causing the increase in said allergies.  There are a few studies ex-US regarding this and I am eagerly awaiting the results.

  • There are tons of sites about this.. Even saw it in a few books. Here are a few websites, but you may want to look it up for tons of more info. Hope this helps! (Sorry on mobile and do not know how to make it a link)

  • Another GREAT article about why rice cereal is bad. And talks about egg yolks, starting at FOUR MONTHS :D

  • We've seen two pediatricians in the last few weeks, and received slightly different advice. The latest doctor mentioned including meats and potential allergens, as a couple of pp have said. I'm going to continue doing research on the newer data, and we've started with avocado in the meantime (DS is not a fan so far). I'm curious what the pediatric GI specialist will tell us next week...
