Best bottom question

So how do you know when it's time to go to the next size pad for BB dipes? DD has just moved from her NB stash to her OS stash and we've got the small snap in pads for her BB's. The pad is very saturated after only an hour or two and if there is a poo the pad NEVER holds it- it gets all over the inside of the cover. Is this normal for BB dipes or do I need medium pads? I hate to order the next size up when we've barely gotten any use out of these smalls. :(

It's pretty normal for EBF/EFF poo to get everywhere on the covers.  It's only been in the last 4-5 months (G is 19 months) that we've had the ploppable poo where you can re-use a cover.

As far as when to go up in size, a lot of ladies on here use smalls for the smallest and second smallest rise setting, skip mediums, and  use larges on the second largest and largest rise setting.

That being said, if she's saturating a small in an hour to hour and a half it might be time to think about adding some absorbency.  Some options would be:

1.) Get some best bottoms doublers in size small
2.) If you're using the stay dry inserts, consider using hemp/cotton
3.) Try a pad folded flat or tri-folded prefold instead of using the BB inserts
4.) Get medium BB inserts (I highly recommend getting the cotton/hemp blend ones though so you don't outgrow absorbency before rise!)

  • You'll need the bigger pads when you go up a size in the rise snaps. That's they only reason they have sized inserts, so they fit as you make the diaper bigger. Do you have the stay-dry or hemp inserts? The hemp ones will hold more if you're having trouble. You can also add a doubler under the insert to boost your absorption capacity.

I never used BBs with a nb, but I'm going to assume that with newborn poo, you're always going to have that problem in this type of diaper. One of the reasons so many people like prefolds for newborns is because they are more likely to contain the poo and keep it off the cover.

Everything they said.  As much as I love BBs, they are probably a little better suited for after the EBF/EFF poo stage.

  • Yes, BB is better to use when you lo has been on solid food for a little bit and their poop can be plopped.
My lo is 10 months, and poop can still go all over the cover. I use them anyway because of the prints, but I don't pull for them allot still. I know it's probably going to be one of my go to diapers in the next few months though.

  • Right now we are on the second rise setting and still using the small inserts (hemp/cotton). I only have 3 inserts and I only use them when we go somewhere as they fit nicely in the diaper bag. At home I use these covers with flats.

  • I started ds with the medium inserts when he was around 3ish months and for 7 months they were the only diaper I was using. Then he started approaching the upper limit for the medium inserts and I started searching for a different option than spending the money needed to move him up to larges....and I wanted away from microfiber so that put the cost of the large inserts out of my reach(cottom hemp blend ones). So I bought red edge medium prefolds from GMD but they were just not as easy trifolded in the covers as the snap in inserts so I started using them to stuff pockets.....until dh complained of the bulk with both methods. Then on a whim, (and a sort of dare from ladies here) I tried folding a receiving blanket as a flat and found it so easy so I bought me 24 flats and have been using them to stuff pockets, pad folded or pinned with my BB covers. Much cheaper than buying the inserts, just as easy to use as the inserts and a whole lot easier to wash, and more versatile since I can pin a flat on ds when I want to air out his bottom and I can handwash them easy enough when we go OOT.

  • Allegedly the stay dry and hemp inserts have the same absorbency. The hemp is just trimmer.

  • We do have the stay dry inserts. I do remember reading that they are supposed to have the same absorbency as the cotton/hemp, but I don't have any cotton/hemp to compare them to so I have no idea if that's true or not

  • I guess I can't tell. Both hold a ton, and I've never had leaks from saturating the absorbency. However, my cotton/hemp take FOREVER to dry. As in, one dryer cycle on low heat won't cut it. I don't even think a whole cycle on high heat worked, when I did a load of only inserts. Line drying in the sun works the fastest to dry them, IME.

I know someone will disagree with me, but I feel like the microfiber are slightly MORE absorbent than the hemp inserts.
I'm disagreeing with you just bc you aren't allowed to talk about BBs anymore.  So there!

Um, I didn't say "get rid of those stupid BB and buy Blueberrys instead". I was trying to be helpful. (Even if I do think every other cover out there is superior, including TBumz)

  • When my son started saturating the small inserts and I thought it was time to size up, I just snapped one insert in the front and snapped another one in the back snap. So there were two inserts and they overlapped. Wasn't the trimmest of options, but it was cheaper than buying the medium inserts! And once he went up in rise, I purchased larges.

This is kind of like snapping an overnight insert in there... Basically doubling up. Since I have two overnight inserts, I tried this today but had to laugh at how bulky it was. Plus she was super uncomfortable trying to move and sit up- it was just huge and too stiff. < (that's what she said) fine for sleeping I guess, but not very practical for daytime use.
