Cloth Diapering

Newborn-Can't decide which way to go

DD is 2 next month and we have been cloth diapering since 16 months. So I have no idea about the newborn stage. We use kawaii diapers and they have worked great.

LO2 is coming in november and I can't decide what I want to do. I need to keep the costs down so I rather stay away from sized.

Should I buy some kawaii bamboo newborns-I like using pockets so far

or

Should I buy some workhorse fitteds with covers-sized so i would have to keep buying them

I know I could buy some of each but would the fitteds/covers be too much hassle for someone familiar with pockets?

Audrey is going to be a big sister!

I used pockets with my first 3 and have bought prefolds and fitteds for the one on the way. I like them so much I have bought some for the older three too. I really think prefolds and covers are the way to go for newborns :)

  • I would go with the fitteds. Lots of people love them for nb.

You would not have to keep buying them. You only need to have a stash for nb size until baby will fit into OS diapers.

  • What about some combination of prefolds and flats? Flats provide a great custom fit up until OS, and if you decide at some point to retire the MF that came with your pockets, you can use the flats and/or small/infant prefolds to stuff the pockets, rather than shopping again for new inserts.
  • My husband is a massive fan of pockets, but will use a fitted on our son if I ask him to before a road trip or something.
He says it's basically like putting two diapers on, but no more difficult than using a pocket.
  • I was skeptical about workhorses with covers for the newborn stage but they ended up being OK. I liked using them but I think my daughter is a stay dry kinda girl and didn't prefer the wetness of the workhorse. She gets squirmy after having a workhorse on for about an hour. So I only use them at home when she an be changed frequently. Still, I think its fun to use the Boingos and cute covers and it's definitely an economical way to add more changes to your stash. My daughter is a pooping champion- she was going like 10-12 times a day at first, so it was definitely good to have those! I also didn't like the EBF staining factor of the workhorses but lemon juice and sun took the stains completely out.

  • I had a combination of AIO's, prefolds and pockets for the newborn stage. The AIO only lasted a couple weeks before she outgrew the absorbency. The prefolds worked well once I got the hang of it but my husband was never comfortable with them. The kawaii p&ns were great, love that they're adjustable, they still fit her at 3 months and she's a big baby. She started in the one size pockets at about 1 1/2 months.
  • I loved and still love the workhorses with covers. I have two dozen nb and small prefolds abd 4 each of the workhorses and six covers. At seven weeks I'm still very happy with them and LO fits her OS bum genius but I still use the prefolds most of the time. They are awesome for BF poo.

Workhorses are super easy, will hold in the NB poo well, and you'll darn near make your $$ back when you go to sell them.
  • We had Kawaii P&N's and GMD Workhorse Fitteds (used Thirsties covers with them) and preferred the GMD's for newborns. I'm not a pocket girl though - It doesn't make much sense, but I'd rather put on a fitted then a cover than have to stuff a pocket.
