Fat roll chafing

LO is a pretty chunky and has had recurrent chafing and redness on the fat rolls closest to his groin for a few weeks now. They will get better and heal up and then get red again. He has no other rashes in his diaper area. I have been putting CJs BUTTer on the area with normal diaper changes and aquaphor when we put him in disposables for daycare. Our flip covers and the elastic in disposables tend to rest right in this spot no matter what I do.

Anyone else having this issue? I am at a loss. I will take a pic in the morning when he gets up.

Do you have any wool soakers? They have no elastic. If you have that in rotation with your other covers that may help give his skin a break for a while at least.

Here is a pic of what they look like:

My LO is super sensitive and I cannot even use PUL covers. His skin needs absolute breathability in order for it to be happy.

  • Is it literally in the crease between his leg and his genitals? Mine started getting this really badly when he started sleeping on his belly full-time, I think maybe b/c of pooling urine at night? Anyway, the only thing that helped him was to sprinkle a little corn starch in the creases at night before bed, and then to always make sure I dried them out when changing his diaper, and change diaper more frequently. I keep a burp cloth by the changing station to blot/pat the area dry after I use a wipe. Oh, and I went up to a larger size diaper, but IDK how that translates to cloth diapers, sorry!

Maybe try coconut oil if you haven't already? It has worked for cradle cap, "drool" rash, and a ton of other skin issues for my LO.   He has lots of rolls and sensitive skin.  I keep the coconut oil next to the aquaphor....coconut oil for level one, aquaphor for level 2! GL!

No we don't have any wool but that would definitely take the pressure of the area. @sleepy33‌ That's the thing, it's not in the creases it right on the roll. It's where the legs of his diaper sit. I think they are just rubbing him raw. @Snowboarderbritt‌ I haven't tried a&d yet, I'll look into it. @allieb543‌ I have some coconut oil, I'll add that into the rotation. Thanks everyone. Maybe this is just a fat baby stage and when he gets a little taller things will work themselves out? Edit: Arrgg, it ate my paragraphs.

  • Try drying it out as much as possible and coconut oil.

... no advice, but I'm super jealous of y'all chunky babies and their fat rolls!

  • We had this problem for two months. We made sure it was always clean and dry and put Aquaphor in the creases. The pedi also gave us cortisone cream a low dose. We just used it at night and it worked great.

  • Definitely drying it before putting anything on it should help.

What about naked baby time? Just make sure he is on a towel or something easy to clean.

With DD2 we did naked time and just that little bit of time helped with raw spots and eczema. We also used aquaphor and a barrier type cream but I can't remember the name.

  • Is aquaphor safe for cloth diapers? I hear of all you ladies using it and I don't even know what it is.

Coconut oil is safe for cloth and will help clear up any rashes if that is underlying. But keeping it dry is the important part. I only use water on cloth wipes for pee diapers and then wipe him down with a dry cloth.

Naked time will also do wonders, and that is why I love wool covers. They allow constant airflow to the area. Honestly, my babe can't do sposies and even the PUL covers gave him a diaper/heat rash. His skin needed constant airflow in order for it to be happy.

  • @calibr8te‌ I doubt Aquaphor is safe for CDs. It's a heavy duty ointment, I used it on my lips for years before having a baby. It is the only thing that cleared up LOs eczema on his head and face.

I left LO in disposables for the night and the area looked a lot better this morning. It must be the flip covers rubbing him raw. I have used the same covers for months now, I guess his thighs are just the perfect fatness to cause issues now.

  • So little man has a wicked snotty nose and fever and is in no mood for photos but I found this pic online and it looks identical to our issue. It's even in the same spot, not the crease but just down the thigh a little. The only difference is LO is a little fatter.

  • I use cjs on high rubbing areas for Jo to help with the chaffing. Chubby thighs are cute though.

  • Aww poor baby has some serious chaffing.  You gotta get that boy out of the elastic covers.
