Smoothies for a toddler?

When DD started purees she would eat anything! Now she's super picky (hopefully a phase). Right now she'll eat strawberries, bananas, kiwi, yogurt, crackers, cheese, some meats, etc. This morning I made myself a smoothie for breakfast and let DD try some. It had bananas, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, kale, carrots, a little yogurt and ice. She devoured it. Now for my dumb question, is this a bad way for DD to get her veggies in? DH and I think it's genius ;) it's better than her not eating them at all. A family member of mine said it's not a good idea because we aren't teaching her to eat vegetables. But DD is 13 months, it's not like we can tell her "eat your veggies or no cookie." ( not like we give her cookies anyway but you get the point) WDYT?

  • As long as you still offer them in normal form as her age allows I think it's a great idea! My DD2 rarely ate anything at that age and she drank the heck out of smoothies so I packed them full! She is 20 months now and eats plenty of veggies from her plate!

  • I think smoothies are a great idea. I enjoy some fruits much more in a smoothie then eating cut up still as an adult. I wish ds would drink a smoothie, you can make them so healthy. And just keep offering everything at meals as well to see if she aquires a taste for them.

  • Same, put regular veggies out for meals, but know she's getting them in a smoothie. It will probably reduce your stress at meals! Win win!!
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I give my kids smoothies even though they eat veggies. DS isn't a big breakfast person so he usually has a smoothie. Some fruit, kale, carrots

  • Two things--If your child is eating fruit then they're likely making up the nutrients in veggies so supplementing isn't really necessary. It's a good way to get a lot of calories in quickly so if you're worried about that it may be a good choice. Just make sure you do them first thing in the morning or in the evening before bed or they'll make her too full and she'll be more likely to refuse food. Just make sure you're offering new foods at every meal and snack period on her plate for the continuous exposure.

  • If healthy smoothies once in a while are wrong, I don't want to be right.
