We've starting to build our stash. Here's what we've got so far:
6 Thirsties Duo Size 1 Covers
6 Baby City Pockets
3 Sweet Cheeks Pockets
1 SoftBums Omni
2 Grovia Hybrid Covers
2 Grovia Organic Cotton Inserts
Package of 50 disposable Grovia inserts (per DH's request)
I also plan to get 24 newborn prefolds and about 5 newborn workhorses.
DH and I went to a cloth diapering class recently and he really liked the Grovia Hybrid and the SoftBums. We plan to register for more of these 2 brands and I'm sure I'll toss in a couple other randoms too.
What do you think? Are Grovia and SoftBums good choices? Do you think we'll have enough to CD a newborn? If we end up liking prefolds/WH & covers I'll size up as the baby gets bigger.
Re: Starting my stash - thoughts?
Don't count on getting much use out of the Baby City pockets. They are China Cheapies in the worst way (unlike other made in China diapers like Kawaii and Alva which are nice diapers that work well).
I liked the Grovia covers, but did not like the snap-in inserts. They took forever to dry and were not as absorbent as a trifolded prefold (DD would leak with the Grovia insert, but not a prefold). I would get a dozen small prefolds to trifold in the Grovia shells instead of a full stash of the Grovia branded inserts. Same concept, but better performance at a fraction of the cost, IMO. One thing about the Grovia covers is that they run kind of small for OS diapers. This is great at the beginning because your baby will fit them sooner than other OS diapers. It is not so great at the end if your LO is big for his/her age or is a late potty trainer. DD outgrew Grovia covers at 19 months old and is in the late stages of potty training at 27 months.
I've never used SoftBums so I can't provide any feedback on those.
I use SoftBums Omni and Echos as a majority of my DC stash. They work really well as a pocket. I dont love them as an all in 2, because the shell is fleece lined if baby poops or pees a lot you are pretty much guaranteed to have to switch shells whereas an AI2 like Best bottoms that has exposed PUL can be wiped clean. I do love their aplix (Velcro). It's some of the best out there IMO. I've also been very impressed at how well mine have held up over the last 18 months. Finallly I do think my Omnis will be big enough to make it to potty learning, unlike some of my other diapers.
I also use a small tri-folded prefold or a charcoal bamboo insert with the covers and they both work well.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm off to start adding dipes to my registry!
