Nutramigen

Hi ladies. I haven't been on often - May is a very busy month! Also, sorry this ended up so long!

I have a question for you all. DD's ped switched her to nutramigen yesterday bc she was having some bloody mucous in her stool. It wasn't everytime and she has been super happy. So yesterday and today she has been taking just BM and nutramigen but she seems much fussier and more gassy (lots of burps and farts) and it is getting to be a bit of a struggle for her to eat (she is fighting me both on breast and with formula in bottle). She also hasn't been gaining enough weight and found out that in the last two weeks she has only gained 2 ounces total and moved from just under the 70th percentile to the 50th. I have to up her formula intake since I don't produce enough BM. Ped said we would regroup at her 2 month appt at the end of the month to see how this is going.

Anyone have issues switching to nutramigen (beyond them not liking the taste)? Has it made anyone's baby worse? How long did it take when switching for baby to get better? When should I say "this isn't working" bc I'm hating seeing her so uncomfortable? Any other advice bc I'm worried about her slow weight gain and her struggling so much to eat these last couple days?

Lurking from February but I want to share my experience. LO is 12 weeks old now.

We have struggled with weight gain from the beginning (born in 97th percentile and at 2 month check in the 33rd). So I know how worrisome it can be. Do what you can and explore all the options but in the end every baby is different and grows different. My LO must just be a slow grower. After trying EVERYTHING I finally stopped stressing and just let her be.

Recently, we also found blood in the diapers and our doc said 99% of the time it's a milk allergy. So I am on a no milk, no soy diet to see if that clears it up (EBF). If it doesn't then we will try Nutramigen.

So we haven't tried the formula yet, but when we started the no dairy/soy diet I noticed LO got very fussy! I thought it must just be a coincidence but maybe not. She was a really happy baby before but this week has been a struggle. So maybe it's just the LO's don't like change? I hope your LO starts doing better. Good luck!

  • We switched and it helps Sloan get her farts and poo out without pain. She does eat slightly less of it but I think it's because it's thicker??? ( packed scoup versus an unpacked scoup)

@lbliss - thanks for the input. Our ped is pretty sure it's a milk allergy too so that is why we are trying this with the hopes it'll fix it. I'll hold out longer. Ped has mentioned her weight a few times but at the month appt she was perfect after working with a LC to get the right balance of BM and formula - apparently it changed again.

@BethRN1987‌ - DD seems like she is in more pain. She literally was such an easy babe though and hardly fussed at all until now. You are right about it maybe bring thicker. It may also be the taste - hopefully it'll get better. DH got her to take 2 ounces when he got home. I was struggling to get her more than an ounce all day!

  • I tried nutramigen and just couldn't get LO to drink it. She fussed and fought and took forever to get through an ounce. We switched to Allimentum, and she's so much more receptive. No more fussing and crying while she eats. I think the nutramigen must taste terrible.
  • My baby had the same thing. She never did well with powder formula, so we started Similac Alimentum Sat night. It is the prepared in the white bottle. She is soooo much happier!!!! We used to have daily screaming sessions, now we don't!
