Cloth Diapering

CD and daycare question- wipes

I am taking a new full-time position soon (start date not final but probably June 1) so N will be in daycare 2 or 3 days/week.  Up until now family- mostly my MIL and sister watched him in our house when I worked part-time, so we didn't have to worry about the logistics.  Daycare has no problems with cloth as long as we send pockets already stuffed or AIOs.  But what should we do for wipes?  At home we use mostly cloth wipes with a peri bottle to wet them, but have disposables on the changing table for super messes, when I forget to put the wipes away, when we run out of wipes, etc.

Should I try to use cloth wipes at daycare, or just take disposables? I didn't even think to ask this question on our daycare tour, so I don't know if they have a preference or rules (N is the first CD baby they have had, but one of the two infant room caretakers CD-ed her children).  What do you do for daycare wipes?

Our daycare does community wipes and each month we have to bring in 3 containers of wipes. Might want to ask if they do something similar.

Our daycare provides disposable wipes, so I've never bothered to send cloth ones.  Unless everyone has to bring in their own wipes, I would think that storage space might start to be a problem.  I know that my daycare doesn't really have room for much more on their changing table.

If you still want to send them, just talk to your daycare about how to best package them for easy storage and use.

  • We use all disposible, daycare and home, but I would imagine that even if I did use cloth wipes I would use disposible for daycare. I think it would be a little complicated to make sure they have some place to put dry cloth wipes and then a spray bottle or if you pre-wet then you would have to remember to pack them fresh every day. FWIW if you do go with disposible wipes for DC I really like the cheap Parent's Choice unscented wipes or the similar brand from Sam's Club. They are sturdy and I usually only use one for poo diapers. I recently bought Huggies brand because they were on sale for the same price. They are flimsy and fall apart. I usually have to use about 3 of those.

  • Our daycare provides disposable wipes.  I brought in cloth ones the first day, and they said that they'd use them if I wanted to, but frankly, I wanted to make things as easy on them as possible, so we've just gone with their disposable wipes.  It'd be a whole different story if we had to pay for them, but since we don't, I'm not too fussed.

I also agree with @welly01 that I think the logistics of it might be difficult if they aren't already doing separate wipes for each child.  If they are though, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do cloth wipes.

I could imagine sending in a small wet bag (or even an old wipes container if you have it) with pre-wetted wipes for them to use during the day.

Our daycare does this as well. When we first started they specifically said they were cool with cloth but wanted us to bring disposable sensitive wipes. Then they compile them in a wipes warmer for the babies.
  • We send disposables to cd big messes are where cloth wipes are the best!!

  • We use cloth at home, but I think I may use disposables when DS2 goes to daycare because I'd hate for them to accidentally throw them away.  We'll have to see what the DCP thinks about it once we choose one.

I agree with @coppert0p.  I would hesitate to send cloth wipes bc it would be easy to throw them away out of habit.

One of our DCs provided wipes, so we didn't worry about it.  The other we provided disposable.

We send ~24-30 pre-moisten wipes in a little wet bag that we stick in the wet dry bag. DC just leave the wipe bag in the wet dry bag in between changes.
Since we do the same thing at home with the same wipe wet bag, we haven't had any problem going through them.
They have their own disposable wipes, so if they run out or we forget to pack wipe, then they can use theirs. We use a wipe solution to prevent diaper rash so we prefer for our wipes.
We haven't had anyone throw out any wipes or diapers yet. They just wrap everything up in the dirty diaper and stick it in the wet bag.
DC has also mentioned that the cloth wipes wipe up better than the disposables. :-D

Thank you ladies!  I am going to check into the changing logistics (community wipes vs. each baby having his/her own) and will probably go disposable from there.  Though there are only 4 kids in the infant room at this time, so maybe cloth would work.
