TTC after 35

Fertility Consult question

Hey Ladies,

I am going to a Fertility doctor next week and was just curious as to what to expect? Will it basically be a question and answer meeting or will he run/perform test? I am nervous but also so excited to get the ball rolling. Thanks,

  • Do you think I should take my FF charts?

  • My first visit with my curent RE was mostly talk and going over all the paperwork I had to fill out.  I really don't remember what cycle day I was on, but I he did do a follie count and some cultures.  We were sent off with labs for a bunch of blood work that needed to be done.  I had already been to an RE in another state and that I had done two IUIs with.  I had already had many of the baseline testing done as well, so I feel that we were ahead of the game in knowing what was coming and were pretty well versed in the terminology and such. I did have to repeat quiet a few things because the new RE wanted his own baseline testing done.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I happened to go on cd2 so my RE did and us and bloodwork. We set up my HSG and did all the genetic testing on my husband and I. We also left that day with a plan for that month. Good luck!

Your first consult with a fertility specialist is generally 45 minutes to an hour.  During that time, you will fill out a survey regarding your fertility (how long have you been trying, last menstrual cycle, previous births/miscarriages, family history - including that of your significant other), have initial blood work drawn (if your significant other is joining your for the consultation, they will take his blood as well), and speak with a financial counselor regarding payment plans, insurance, and the like.

Your specialist will review the survey with you and discuss all your immediate options, as well as caveats, and then set up a preliminary plan of attack.  Since your period has already come, you will be asked to call ahead when your period arrives again so they get a baseline reading.

If you have been charting your cycles or on medications - including supplements - write it out and bring that with you.  Also, bring a notebook and pen. There's so much information to digest and you will need to make notes.  I found that having a note pad with me made it easier to later ask questions that I may not have thought about at the time of the first consult.

Good luck!!  I hope this has been helpful.
  • Thank you all so much for the information!
