Cloth Diapering

NB Overnight Diapers Q

So C is 16 days old today. I usually change her three times during the night, before each nighttime feeding. Is it normal to have to change this often? I currently just put her in a regular fitted (prefold I had converted to fitted)with a cover. Her diapers are always soaked, but no leaks. Should I do something else? Do I need to do something else? And when do you need to think about ON solutions? My DS is also in cloth, but I just stuff a pocket with a microfiber insert and bamboo doubler for ON. He's not a very heavy wetter.
I used disposables for the NB stage with my other two and really only changed in the night if they pooped or the diaper was really soggy. So cding a NB is uncharted territory.
Sorry for the rambling, I hope this makes sense.

Yes, changing that often is totally normal and necessary during the NB stage.  They pee (and poop) all the time at that age, and you don't really want them sitting in that too long.  Somewhere around 3-4 months is when we started letting DS2 go a 6-8 hour stretch without changing at night.  That's when he dropped one of his feeds. That's also when we got ON fitteds and later bamboo prefolds with doublers.

IMO the best time to start worrying about an ON solution is when you start dropping a night time feed or two.  Or when your current solution isn't working anymore due to leaks.

This. If DS woke to feed, he would get changed. We only need an ON solution early because he started STTN on his own early.

I third all this. If your terribly concerned about soaking you could add a doubler, but you will still need to change at every wake-up. DD started dropping feeds and sort if STTN at around 2.5-3 months. We started doing Sbish fitteds shortly after.
  • We started out changing at every feeding and then after maybe a month we started changing at every other feeding unless he pooped. At about 1.5 to 2 months we started going all night without changing unless he pooped. At that age he ate once in the middle of the night and once in the early morning and occasionally had a poop early (5am) in the morning too. The reason we did it this way was because he was super easy to put back to sleep if we didn't wake him with a diaper change. We never saw any irritation or sensitivity of the skin due to wetness.

  • After about a month or two LO stopped pooping at night.  He was still up a ton to eat (he is not a good sleeper), but I stopped changing him since he wasn't pooping.  It was much easier to get him back to sleep without the diaper change added in there.
