waking up at the crack of dawn!

My little one is waking up before 6am.  She was sleeping until almost 7 and goes to bed around 8:30 sometimes a little later.  I don't understand why she has changed.  Is this some weird stage like the 4mo wakeful period? She was teething 2 weeks ago but has been better.  I really do not want to keep her up later because she is tired and ready for bed at that time.  Any ideas?

Re: waking up at the crack of dawn!

  • DD usually gets up around 5:30ish (can be anywhere from 4-6 actually) to eat and then will go back to sleep for an hour or 2, or even more.  She's usually up for the day around 7, if I'm lucky she'll sleep until 8 on the weekends.  She's still nursing - is your LO taking bottles or nursing still, and maybe waking to eat?

It may just be her new schedule...I'm finding that every time we settle into a routine something changes.

We're doing this too, and I have no idea. I don't want to keep her up later either as she clearly is ready to sleep then, but when she gets up she doesn't want to nurse. She wants to play! I feel for you!

  • actually, now that I think about it, the past couple days DD has not gone back to sleep as easily as she used to after nursing!  She eventually does go back down, but yesterday she was up for a good hour and this morning it was probably 30-45 min.  Yikes...I hope it's just a phase :)

  • My LO has been waking early in the morning as well, 5:30 and he used to sleep until almost 7. I think it's partly because it's starting to get light out earlier. I'm going to try putting up blackout curtains. I also wonder if it's related to his naps though, I was just reading this about nap changes in babies/toddlers and they say one sign that kids are ready for one nap/day is waking earlier in the morning.
  • DS did this for 2-3 weeks, gradually waking earlier and earlier. In the last week or so, he even started waking up around 2am. We did a little CIO for those night wakings, and all of a sudden, he was sleeping until 7am again without an issue. Thank goodness! I was not able to function with 4:30 wake-up crying and still having to keep up with three kids.

  • It really is the strangest thing.  She is on milk and food.  I don't think it is the food because she sometimes doesn't finish her bottle or eat her fruit right away.  I think I will try cutting out her 2nd nap. The does make sense.  If she is napping 2x a day she might not need it and can sleep longer at night.  Thanks. Good luck everyone

  • Mine was doing this too, but what she actually needed was an EARLIER bedtime. We moved her bedtime to 7:30 and now she's sleeping until 7 or 7:30 in the morning again! Before, she was going down at 8:00/8:30 and waking at 6:00/6:30. I was nervous to try it because I thought for sure an earlier bedtime would have her waking at 5:00, but it worked wonderfully. :) Good luck!

  • I cut her 2nd nap yesterday and this morning she woke up at 6:22 which is much better then 5:45.  Hopefully, this will continue to get better!!

Mine did that too.  He was sleeping until 7-715 ish and now it is 630 am.  No reason, same bed time.  We have tried keeping him up later but still he is up at 630.
  • DS is doing this too.  So glad I'm not alone.  He is also getting up around 5:30.  I just make him lay in his crib until 6.  A few days he has gone back to sleep, but not always.  I figured it was teething because every week he has a new tooth coming in right now.  We were on a weekend getaway this past weekend and he didn't go down for bed until almost 10 every night (usually goes to bed around 8).  He still woke up super early and only took his usual 1.5 hr nap.  Ugh.
