Cloth Diapering

Overnight solution?

DD is 4 months old and roughly 17lbs. She wets a lot and she has gotten into a nice habit of pooping between 1 and 4 am. After she does that, if she pees it gets everywhere. We currently use disposables at night because of the wetness factor. During the day we have BG 4.0 stuffed with the regular insert and BG Freetimes, she never leaks in these because we change her often. I have had a few recommendations but am not sure which route to go or what will be better in the long run. One friend recommended just stuffing the pockets with prefolds and a hemp something or other for at night. A different friend recommended a bamboo fitted from a company with an S that she must have typed wrong because I couldn't google it. I am leaning towards fitteds. If I get fitteds I will probably buy thirties diaper covers, we loved them when she was a newborn, the ones we have will be too small if we go this route. Also what is the difference between hemp and bamboo?

I hope that isn't a jumbled mess. Essentially I am looking for recommendations and places to look to buy. All of my other diapers were bought at a local store. I'll check back later but I have to get ready for work.

I love Sustainablebabyish OBF (Overnight bamboo fitteds) for overnight.  I use them with a Blueberry Coverall cover and <knock on wood> haven't had a leak yet.  We used to use disposables, but they weren't cutting it anymore.

This, We also use Sbish overnight. The sized Thirsties cover barely cover the same size (I.e. Med and med) but the size 2 or other OS covers fit great. A lot of people also like wool covers, but I personally haven't tried them.

  • Up to now I've been using GMD cotton fitteds on my baby with a hemp doubler. Now, at 4 months he is outgrowing the absorbancy. I'm going to try Geffen baby hemp flats and Nicki's bamboo flats. Many people recommended the Sbish flats to me but they are more like a prefold an I did not like prefolds when he was a newborn. I like Thirsties covers and Nicki's covers. I also have RAR covers and the elastic is too tight for me and Grovia covers. I like Grovia covers but they have a very narrow crotch. It works with flats since they are fairly trim but I don't see them working with prefolds. Hemp is slightly more absorbant than Bamboo but not by much. Abby's Lane has free shipping on all orders and you should be able to find most of these things on there.

  • I should be getting them in the next couple days.  I'm excited to try them.  Hopefully they work well.  Obviously I don't want leaks but I don't worry too much about trying something that might leak.  He sleeps right through it.  Shoot, I could put him back down in a leaky diaper and he would sleep until morning.  The only pain is having to change sheets and whatnot. If these don't work I'll def try the sbish flats next.

  • She probably recommended S'bish that's short for Sustainablebabyish. You can also find their store by googling Sloomb. I use Twinkie Tush Night Nights which are pricier but have a bunch of absorbency. Both hemp and bamboo are great absorbers. One holds just a tiny but more than the other (can't remember which one) but the difference is negligible. Both don't absorb as fast as cotton or microfiber though so some who have babies who pee a lot and all at the same time choose to use a hemp or bamboo doubler outside of something that absorbs quicker. When your LO poops at night, is this during a MOTN feeding session? If I hear or smell poop and I'm up nursing him, I do change him into a clean fitted before putting him back down.
DD is formula fed and mostly sleeps through the night, so she doesn't often have a MOTN feeding. Most of the time she fusses enough for one of us to get out of bed and change her, even then she sometimes sleeps through the change. We have 24BG diapers for daytime, we usually make it every other day, sometimes not. How many fitteds would you reccomend?

  • I would get 3 fitteds at least.  That way if you miss a wash day or the diapers aren't dry by bedtime you have an extra.  Also, if she is fussing due to wetness in a 4.0 which is staydry then I would get or make a few fleece liners for the fitteds.  I use Bummi's. Amazon 5 for $5.
