Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Problems on a chromosome level? (Bit of a rant)

Today I went to the doctor for my 10 week check-up, only to find my baby didn't have a heartbeat. The heartbeat was there at 6 weeks and the baby had grown to the size it was supposed to be by 10 weeks. I was careful, I ditched the coffee (which I was borderline addicted to) I changed my diet, lightened my physical load at work and everything. The doctor told me something must have been wrong with the baby on a chromosome level, and this was mother nature's way of dealing with it. She said I could have been sitting at home with my feet up all day and this still could have happened. Exactly what kind of miscarriage is this? I know a DNC is to remove the baby is recommended, but what happens next? Has anyone else had a loss like this? What should I expect from my body? I'm just so hurt, heartbroken and confused right now. One of my best friends is 5 months pregnant with her third child and all I feel is jealousy for her. Her first two pregnancies she smoked, drank coffee, and ate whatever she wanted and her kids came out totally healthy. I call myself being careful and lose my first child 10 weeks in. I don't really know too many people who suffered  a loss so I don't really have anywhere else to turn. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First, I'm sorry for your loss.  Though it doesn't make it any easier, 1st trimester miscarriages are very common and often due to a genetic error.  Your doctor is right by saying you did nothing to cause this.  It is called a missed miscarriage which means that the baby is not viable but your body has not figured that out yet.  If you read the thread what I wish I knew after my D&C that will give you some insight about the process involved.  If you have any more questions please ask.

  • The ladies are right. It sucks, but you can do everything right and lose the baby anyway. I, too, had a missed miscarriage. My body still thought I was pregnant, but at 10 weeks it turned out the baby had only made it to 6 or 7 weeks. The D&C was not at all bad physically. The emotional takes time. Anger and jealousy are normal and the Miscarriage Board is a great place to deal with your feelings. We have all been there. I hope you find the peace and support you need here.

  • I'm sorry. I had a missed miscarriage discovered at 18 weeks. We did opt for testing to discover that our daughter had triploidy. Like PP said there is nothing you can do to prevent a chromosomal issue. I did not have a D&C but the link that others posted is a great resource. Hoping you can find some peace in the weeks to come.
