Flat head

Today at my daughters 2 month check her pediatrician said that she was getting a very slight flat head and do to tummy time 3 times a day. Guess I haven't been doing enough. :( any of you ladies dealing with this as well, or have with previous children? I'm very upset and paranoid that it's just going to get worse

Re: Flat head

  • We are. It's mild as well. We've had a hard time finding time to do tummy time because we can't do it right after he eats (throws up) and when he wakes he usually wants to eat right away. There is generally only 2 times a day for 30-40 mins when he's okay with tummy tine. Lately I've been having him nap on me to keep him off the back of his head but that's just creating a different problem with sleep.

  • Same here. The doc didn't say anything but when you look you can see it's flat :( LO hates tummy time so it's not an enjoyable time for us. I try to wear him a lot, but it's getting hot and he doesn't tolerate it long. He loves standing so I got out his bouncy activity set hoping that helps.

    Your not alone!
  • Yea just follow what he wants you to do and it should be fine. Babies skulls change very easy right now so I wouldn't worry yet.

Not sure what you mean by this.
  • @KTdid81‌ Just looked it up! I haven't tried it but will look into it. Thanks!

This is us, too. LO is a happy spitter... seemingly all the time. She will spit up for sure if we do tummy time too soon after eating. I just flip her to her tummy whenever we're hanging out and I realize it's a good time, and she's doing ok so far. Good luck!
  • I'm in the neurosurgeons office right now waiting to be seen because of this. Our pedi thought it was pretty mild but still thought we should meet with the helmet people to see what they think, and they will of course want to sell us a helmet, so I wanted to get a second opinion first. We are also doing physical therapy since it stems from LO preferring to turn his head to the left. You can google plagiocephaly stretches to get some ideas if yours is caused by a similar issue.

  • We were also just told that LO is starting to get a flat spot at his 2 months apt. The pedi didn't seem very concerned and just said to vary the positions more often and do more tummy time. I thought flat heads usually resolved on their own once babies sit up on their own... Am I not taking this issue seriously enough?!
  • We discussed it with our early interventionist today. Will's head is very flat. We are meeting with a physical therapist next week but he should only need position changes and more tummy time. Apparently recent studies show no benefit from helmets and a child's head will improve on their own with some changes.
  • Yep, the neurosurgeon just said that the new research shows no benefit to helmets and that most eventually resolve on their own. I'm mad at myself for worrying so much about it.

  • Lurker here.... My DS (2 1/2) developed a very flat head from not moving his head. We frequently changed his position etc to no avail. He wore a cranial helmet from 6 months to 1 year. In his case, it was hugely beneficial and I'm so grateful we did it. DS has since been diagnosed with other medical conditions which explain the lack of movement on his part.

In most cases, I think the issue will resolve itself though.
