Cloth Diapering

I think I have it sorted...maybe.

Okay, So, I posted a couple days about switching to cloth diapers from disposables. And so far its been mostly trying to figure how many diapers I'll need for two babies (a ten month old and a newborn coming in October) but I think I have it sorted out. Here's what my thoughts are so far:

36 flats or prefolds. - I haven't decided for sure, but I am leaning more towards flats because I wouldn't have to buy two different sizes.
10 diaper covers - I figure two newborn and four one size for each of them should be enough?
12 one size pocket diapers - I'm really only going to use them for overnight or while we're out and most likely only on my DD until the other baby can fit into them. And by then we'll probably (hopefully) have added more to our stash.
Bamboo inserts. - Haven't figured how many I'll need... half dozen? or would a dozen be more safe? Sunbaby sells them per dozen and I'm thinking that's where I'll get them from.
2 diaper pail liners
2 or 3 wetbags for the diaper bag
and of course some snappis, but I'm not sure how many. 3? I think I saw somewhere that they came in a 3 pack.

What do you think? Too much? Too little? Anything I'm missing?

  • That should probably be enough total changes to just get by washing EOD at the beginning, and plenty by the time the nb is a couple months old.

The only thing that you will definitely need more of right away is nb covers. 4 is fine for OS, but you need more for nb, not less. If the flats or prefolds and covers is the only type of diapers you plan on using for the nb, then you should plan on having more like 6+ covers if you plan on washing EOD, or 4 for every day washing. Newborns poop way more often, and that poop is way more likely to run onto the cover.

If you go with preolds, you will want more than 36 total, because you will need a minimum of 2 different sizes.

  • A lot of people end up not being able to use pockets overnight because the amount they have to stuff leaves gaps, and leads to leaks. It might work. It might not. Just be prepared to try something else if the pockets don't work ON, especially for your older one. Personally, I keep pockets in the diaper bag, and leave them for babysitters.

I also agree on the more covers. You could also try some size 1 covers that may last longer than newborn until the baby fits the OS better. I would also suggest some fitteds. Those can be used overnight with covers and may be better than pockets as far as fit and absorbency goes.
  • I agree with what PPs have said. I'm also not sure that 36 flats to share between the two LOs is going to be enough for EOD washing. A NB can go through 18 changes a day fairly easily, so 36 is the amount usually recommended for just one child unless you're washing every day. You might consider getting a dozen NB or small prefolds in addition to the flats. The NB will outgrow them in a few weeks or months, but then they make great stuffing for pockets.

  • You only need one insert per pocket diaper. Even if you choose to double stuff sometimes unless you're using every pocket every day.

  • I've decided to only buy a few pockets and some fitteds to try out before making any hard decisions, who knows I might like both or neither. And every thing else too.

    Thanks for all your help!
